Epitomizes Maineris lack of ability to identify hitters. PM cut the dude in a WALK ON tryout. Then he comes back and dominates over PMs players.

Not sure if serious.

There wasn't a spot for him and by most accounts he wasn't ready to contribute. Paul told him to go to Eunice and there would be a great shot that a spot would open for him. I'd say 2009 worked out OK without him, wouldn't you?

Don't get me wrong. At the time he retired, I think he was the best in the game. But let's not get carried away.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ.

Anyone with a functioning brain who witnessed the Laval era should be able to discern the difference between program's lethargy when he departed, and the state of the program now.

Mainieri is a quality coach who is articulate and energetic (unlike his predecessor) and who represents the program and university well. Houston is a very good team, and LSU ran out of mojo Saturday night. Mainieri did make some questionable decisions, but there isn't a single baseball coach or manager who doesn't.

Onward and upward...

Mainieri has 1 trump card which Smoke didn't have: a nat'l title. How long can he keep playing that card?

Well, and he could pull the old "Not running the unequivocally most prestigious program in the country straight into the fricking ground" trump card.

Maybe until the program shows that it's declining every year under his watch.

If by running down players in the press and taking zero responsibility for losses is representing well then I guess he did.

Mainieri after the game last night:

quote:

Winning the championship is our standard at LSU and it’s what we shoot for. When we come up short of that goal, it’s always disappointing. The thing that makes it most disappointing is having to say goodbye to guys like Nate Fury, Sean McMullen, Christian Ibarra and Kurt McCune. Also, you look at guys like Aaron Nola and Joe Broussard who will probably be going into professional baseball. When those kids leave, part of you leaves with them because you’re invested in their lives. It has been an honor and privilege to coach all of these guys. It’s so hard to say goodbye to some wonderful young men who have given so much to this school and this baseball program. This game today was not indicative of our season. We won 46 ball games, the SEC Tournament Championship and we were a national seed. We were 2-0 in this tournament and seemingly in the drivers seat yesterday. Unfortunately we just didn’t get it done when we needed to. When I think of the 2014 season, I’m not going to think about this game. I’m going to think about all the great things that these guys accomplished throughout the season. They gave us everything they had from April 1 to now. They’ve done remarkable things and played great ball. They left it all on the field, and I’m so proud of them. I thought we were ready to play today. Unfortunately we just got ourselves into a hole early in the first inning. We limited the damage, but the third inning was a nightmare. Seven of the men that we walked or hit scored runs. You can’t win baseball games against good teams when you do stuff like that. It was a tough one to take, and I feel bad for all of our loyal fans that came out this whole weekend. I can assure you our guys did their very best. We’ll have to move forward now.

The whole "Mainieri throws players under the bus" narrative is so tired.

Criticize him for his coaching decisions when they call for it, but don't just make shite up.

I can go and find plenty of quotes where he's thrown anyone and everyone under the bus but I don't have the time nor energy. However he's a well known prick which is fine if you are winning big but not making it past the regionals in 3/5 years ain't winning big.

K

No way you'd take anything out of context either. It's not like you have an agenda.

Ok well it took me like 30 seconds to find my quote. Mainieri is straightforward. He doesn't give BS answers. That doesn't mean he is throwing players under the bus. He treats his players like adults.

They also lack that killer instinct that Bertman could always bring out. It's just different. Each year PM teams just don't look like they give a shite come postseason. Bertman had those boys believing they were king kong

Killer instinct? Repeat this with me. There. Is. No. Such. Thing. As. Clutch.
