Jones Obit

He played for the Tigers in the mid-late 1970s along with his twin brother, LeRoyal Jones. Leroid scored a TD against USC in 1979 on a pass from Steve Ensminger:

quote:

Southern Cal would score first to take a 3-0 lead, but the Tigers came back on a 14-yard pass from Steve Ensminger to LeRoid Jones to give LSU a 6-3 advantage and that lead expanded and had the Tiger Stadium crowd really buzzing when walk-on kicker Don Barthel hit a 32-yarder in the final two minutes to send the Tigers to the dressing room up an amazing 9-3.

USC 1979

RIP.

Thanks, LeRoid, for your contributions to Tiger football. You left us way too early. May God show you the mercy we all will need when our time comes.

I knew LeRoid at LSU. He was a very nice guy and a very good football player. Very humble and a good guy for as long as I knew him. Had not seen him in many years. Actually probably 30 years. LeRoyal was/is the same way. Both good guys.

Oh no!! Rest in Peace LeRoid.

Btw I was there North Endzone. USC #1. Tigers were supposedly out matched but our guys came with an attitude. Phantom face mask call (maybe Benjy Thibideaux?) kept USC winning drive alive. Cholly Macs last year. Charles White from USC. Electric night time atmosphere. Later in the season our guys faced off against #1 Bama played them to a standstill but lost 3-0 on a foggy night. That same year they carried Mac off the field for his last game in the Tangerine. Magical season for me as a freshmen and was hooked for life. Thanks to LeRoid and his teammates including Ensminger.

Ditto; I was there as well, in the North end zone. Electric atmosphere, to say the least.

I was in 8th grade, we'd gone to a Shaw H.S. football game, but listened to the end on the radio. I was heartbroken. That atmosphere in T.S. carried through on the radio, you could just tell how it was.

Listening to the post-game show with John Ferguson and Doug Moreau, with the crowd still in the stadium and cheering for at least a half-hour. Man, a benchmark night for LSU football.

Prayers up for the repose of LeRoid's soul.

Only game I can remember where LSU got a standing ovation from the fans after losing a game.Still ranks as one of the greatest games I've ever attended.

No one worried about traffic jams that evening The fans refused to leave after the game as they saluted Leroid and Leroyal and an incredible effort by an undermanned Tiger team against a roster full of future NFL stars. They also lost to BAMA 3-0 that season. Two great efforts in losing causes.

Rest in heaven bro. I've never met him personally but heard good stories about him. I am forever grateful as he is a charter member for my fraternity on LSU's campus.

post game traffic then was not bad - there were not 150 k people on campus for a game then either.

Was it him or his brother that had a mustang and got caught speeding on Hwy 30 - doing well over 100mph and he told the trooper he was burning out the bad gas?
