He had two qualifications for an ivy, and top notch student was not one of them.

As I recall he had an ACT of 25. None of my four kids had below a 31, and none got the slightest interest from an ivy. All were top honors students at very good high schools.

For athletes they recruit hard they have plenty of endowment scholarship money so you might as well be on athletic scholarship. Who cares what you call it if it is free? For parents that have the capacity to pay a portion of the cost of education, and the kid is not a superstar, they give partial scholarships so that the cost becomes comparable to a state school.
