Best friend was a freshman when Tommy was a senior. Friend was an outstanding athlete. He said Tommy knocked him down 3 times on one play during practice. Said he was untouchable. Oddly, my friend looked a lot like him and used that to his full advantage with the ladies.

He could do it all, but who was better him or Jerry Stovall?

Both were great athletes but I would give edge to Casanova. He just had that "it" factor.

I was at the Notre Dame game in South Bend in 1970 taking a leak in the bathroom of one of the buildings. I had an LSU button on my sweater. An elderly Notre Dame fan asked me if I thought LSU had any chance against the Irish.

I told him that if we played our best game we'd win.

He said something like "I don't think so. We have this receiver named Gatewood, and you've never seen anything like him."

I said "Well we have this defensive back named Casanova, and Gatewood has never seen anything like him."

Casanova was on Gatewood the whole game and held him to only a couple of meaningless catches.

Joe Thiesman always joked after that was the most on target pass he threw all day, right to TC, "and Tommy dropped it" !! But what a stud he was for sure recall from my adolescence!

As I said above, I was at that game sitting about 10 rows up in the end zone. My wife had gotten me a new SLR camera for an early Christmas present and I snapped this shot of that pass. Casanova would probably have taken it all the way if had hanged on.

He very well may have ended up in the Hall fame if he didn't quit to go back to school.

Actually, it was Bill Fleming who called the 1970 LSU/Ole Miss game and not Chris Schenkel. Schenkel was doing the Arkansas/Texas game in Austin during the day with Bud Wilkinson

LSU lost the game in 1970 to Norte Dame in South Bend, 3-0. Casanova dropped the interception, which would have made it a 0-0 tie. The two have never tied in their history.

Bert Jones unloaded a long pass to Al Coffee that Clarence Ellis batted away. The next year, LSU beat the Irish, 28-8 in Tiger Stadium.

Casanova was injured from the Opener against Colorado, returned for the Alabama game. He made a key interception against Notre Dame two weeks later

Casanova played for Notre Dame. There was a Notre Dame. They were St. Michaels before that. Nelson Stokley played at Crowley

Tommy is the GOAT. He was the same age as my brother and my dad worked with his family. The are really great people.I briefly dated his sister in college. She played for the LSU basketball team and is the only girl I ever dated who was taller than me. (I'm 6' 1" and she was 6' 3")

One of the greatest player that ever put on a football jersey at LSU! Also Jerry Stoveall was also great but never got the press!

My Dad's favorite Casanova story, was him being awarded "Italian-American Man of the Year" in New Orleans.

He accepted the award, but in his acceptance speech informed the group that he was not Italian at all.

Best QB to ever play for LSU and Mac had him sharing playing time. People want argue the JL and JJ bullshite, but that was nothing compared to BJ sharing time with PL.

Tommy was one of the most talented, exciting football players to ever play in the SEC. The fact he was a three time AA says all anyone needs to know.

I see he was a three time pro bowler, but only played six seasons in the NFL, did injuries cut his career short?

A lot of guys had short careers back then because of the pay. I can't find data from the specific years he played, but in 1980 (only 3 years after he stopped playing) the average NFL salary was $78,657. In 1982 it was $90,00 which means during his time he was probably averaging $60-65k, certainly not chump change back then but if you're deciding between being a doctor or playing football another 5-6 years it doesn't seem like much of a competition.
