Exactly how good was Tommy Casanova?

I see he's the only football player in LSU history to be named an all american three times and one of two players to have his number retired. Since we're known as 'DBU', what recent LSU player would you compare him to? I know there's quite a few tigers on here that had the privilege of watching him play.
Thanks, I'll hang up and listen

My dad talks about him like he was PP7 or LF7.

He was fluid and an incredible athlete. Coaches fought over him being on offense or defense. All-Pro Safety.
Recent comparison would be PP7 because of similar size and unbelievable natural ability.

He is my favorite LSU player.
Good description.
To me he would be sort of a combination of PP7 and TM7.
He made things look easy.

He was as good as anyone I have seen! I wouldn't say he was the GOAT at LSU, but he is definitely at the top!

if he could have played as a freshman he would have been a 4 time all American, he was asked once why he was so good and he said on every play of every game he played in whether he was playing against an all American or the 3rd team guy he played as hard as he could.

I'll always remember him knocking Alabama "stud" RB Johnny Musso out of the game...a hit on the sideline when Casanova was playing safety.
BTW, also a terrific punt returner.

He and Craig Burns still hold the Record of running back 3 Punts for Touchdowns in a Single Game.

I see he was a three time pro bowler, but only played six seasons in the NFL, did injuries cut his career short?

No, he wanted to go to Medical School. Players weren't making millions back then.

Was very good, his athleticism was as good as I ever witnessed by a Tiger, was very smart as well. He and Craig Burns were fun to watch. Don't honestly know who he reminds me of.

Returned two punts for TDs on Dec. 5, 1970 vs Ole Miss, in a game for the SEC title. On ABC prime time with Chris Schenkel and Lee Grosscup.
LSU won 61-17.

Wish I had the privilege of watching those great tigers play. I'm 38 so my favorite tigers of early years were Harvey Williams and his extremely long neck, Tommy Hodson, and Tony Moss

Those 80's teams had some great players too.

To me he was the best all around player LSU ever
