We found ourselves in this exact situation in both games with 3 ABs left. Yet PM approached each one completely differently.

In game 1, we were up 4-2 in the 6th and Lange falls apart. Bugg comes in to stop the bleeding and we leave the inning down 6-4. In game 2, Poche reaches his limit. Bugg comes in. We give up another run and are down 3-1. No one is in the pen. We scratch a run in the top of the frame.

I understand this next part uses hindsight. In game 1, Bugg is pulled for Latz and He struggles. Bain has to finish the frame. However, we do end up with 8 runs. Enough to win had we held them to 6 or 7. But in game 2, we go with Newman.

What we see here is PM obviously saving Bugg In game 1. Why? We weren't down 5 runs. It was just 2. We were still very much in that game. And another inning or two wouldn't have burned Bugg for the weekend.

I know we lost game 1 for other reasons. Lange didn't have his best. We ran out of 3 innings, 2 of them on questionable calls. Game 2 was a lesson in being unclutch. But this was a huge turning point where, it's apparent because of game 2, that PM didn't keep the guy in he had most confidence in to keep CC off the board.

Good season. Fun to watch down the stretch. Always disappointed when the season ends in a loss. Geaux Tigers.

Classic Coach Marinara. Just can't win when it counts.

Sad.

More than anything, I think this offers a little insight into the mindset of each coaching staff. CC played like they HAD to win game 1.

When you lose the "what if" always seems to be a better option, but the truth is there is no way to know if the final result would have changed.

But fans love to play the game and that is what makes the game great

Only one team's season doesn't end in a loss.

CC was a tenacious team.

Not gonna lie. Kind of tired of pulmonary.

Yeah. I conceded it was hindsight in some part. But again, I think the important takeaway is that when PM pulled Bugg, he showed that he thought it was more important to have him 100% for game 2 than hold a 2-run deficit in game 1.

Wasn't game 1 his first game back in a while? Was PM just looking to give him a little bit of work but didn't trust keeping him in too long? (I have no idea just asking)

Because Alden Cartwright, Joey B, Will Lemarche, Sweaty Joe, and Christopher K. Cotton were unavailable.

So with two lefties in the first 3 ABs due up in the 7th, you conclude that pulmonary brought in a left-hander to save Bugg and not because, there are, you know, two lefties due up?

I BLAME NOLAN CAIN and his horrible base coaching. He killed us early in the season when he was unsure of our talent and way to aggressive. Then when it counts he doesnt wanna screw up so he just does station to station.

EVERYONE knows with a man on 3rd and 1 out...a ball hit to the right side / Pitcher you check to see if he looks...if he doesnt...you run. What does he do, he holds one of our fastest runners at 3rd and instead of having a lead we r tied and he dies at 3rd base.

Are you basing this just on how Bugg was used in each game, or on who replaced him?

And LSU has made it to Omaha on numerous occasions under PM. I don't blame the team's performance on coaching--otherwise the coaches would be in the batter's box and on the field micromanaging (though there is some of that in calling pitches or giving signs to batters). PM and AC can't control a hitter's swing and pitch selection. We were very fortunate to have gotten this far--perhaps it was more the point we have a set of good players (and not a marsupial) that LSU got as far as they did--considering the question marks during the period before the 'possum game. The biggest complain I have about the Super Regional is the late start times for the games (it was 9 pm Eastern Time here in PA, which means getting to bed after 1:30 am for a 9-inning game).

I don't think Mainieri had a handle on the bullpen all year. Blame the inconsistency maybe. Except for Newman they all seemed interchangeable. Bugg, Reynolds, Stallings, Gilbert, I was always surprised to see who he was bringing in.

Who replaced him.

ETA: I worded it wrong in the OP and fixed it. Bugg didn't go in the 7th in either.

How can you make that call given Latz wasn't available in game 2?
