Are you saying we would have gone with Latz in the 7th in game two if he was available?

To face Marks, maybe. I think if Latz was a more traditional guy not coming off of injury, you probably see him come to retire Marks, then bring in Newman until he can't go any more.

You are missing the matchup aspect of this. In game 2, Bugg came in to face three right handers. Then he was lifted for Newman. It is possible that Latz gets the ball in that spot to face Marks if he isn't still recovering, though. Do you even pulmonary bullpen, bro?

I think they put us in the late slot because they know that they will still get a large audience with LSU. If they put those other teams on at 8pm a lot of their fans wouldn't bother staying up late to watch.

Bugg didn't go in the 7th in either.

Gotcha, at first I thought you were saying it was different because Bugg went an extra inning in game 2, but he was actually used the same way in both games.

As for Latz vs Newman, I would assume it was as simple as score and game 1 vs game 2 facing elimination?

facing elimination?
Obviously. Again, I know it's hindsight.

We obviously didn't have enough lefties for this.

It isn't hard to diagnose though. Latz was brought in to face the lefty heavy top of the lineup. In game 2, Bugg was brought in to face the righty heavy bottom of the lineup. Newman was brought in because he was the best available in game 2 and Latz wasn't going to be able to go in any event. You acting like he gave up because he went to Latz doesn't hold up to any type of scrutiny. He played matchups in game 1. Leaving Bugg in to face the lefties wasn't a smart matchup play.

ell_13 - Can I get your thoughts on 2017 line-up?

Consensus seems to be that Poche leaves. Freeman says he will talk to Dodgers (but I expect him to stay). From what I hear, Josh Smith is extremely talented and will be on the field next year, but where? Do you move Duplantis and a weak arm to centerfield? What happens to Romero - still behind Pap and Deichman has first base locked up?

With a very young team and a talented recruiting class coming in, fall baseball will be interesting and it will be interesting to see how PM manages the scholarship numbers. There are always those "wild cards" that leave expectantly (Byrd and Zardon in 2015). Any insight on what the 2017 roster will look like and who our starting 8 are?

Tons is still up in the air. Hard to say anything with any confidence before mid July after signing day.

Freeman Stallings and Poche are threats. And I know many think Poche is a lock to go but he'll be negotiating and you never know what can happen. Same in the opposite direction for Freeman. Many see him staying but who knows how things work out in negotiations.

We had a great draft from a HS standpoint. Only Pint and Nonie look to be gone. Weatherly will listen to offers. He's a JUCO transfer pitcher.

As far as other position players, again, it's tough to say. With as well as we did with the draft, lots of guys will have to leave. Romero wants to play and may not want to compete for time his senior year. Deichmann is not a lock at 1B. Pretty safe to assume Duplantis moves over to CF.

Yeah. I conceded it was hindsight in some part. But again, I think the important takeaway is that when PM pulled Bugg, he showed that he thought it was more important to have him 100% for game 2 than hold a 2-run deficit in game 1.

On TV the color guy commented how poorly Bugg had done against lefties all season. He indicated Bugg may have been pulled to avoid the big lefties CC had coming up, and that's why Latz was inserted.

Also generally manager use their better relievers with a lead and their back line relievers when behind.

The Latz thing was bold, but it didn't work at all. But how many of us weren't thinking after Latz had looked so good that Latz when necessary versus some good left handed bats? But PM essed up, Latz was not ready.

But we went Bugg/Newman last night and guess what? We lost anyway. The odd thing of all this is Reynolds never pitched did he? We were going Reynolds, Bugg, Newman, right? PM and dunn must have been worried about Reynolds and bugg v CC's lefties.

But we'll never know what may have happened Saturday night if only______________.

EVERYONE knows with a man on 3rd and 1 out...a ball hit to the right side / Pitcher you check to see if he looks...if he doesnt...you run. What does he do, he holds one of our fastest runners at 3rd and instead of having a lead we r tied and he dies at 3rd base.

This isn't on the third base coach. Running on contact with a man on third is a head coach decision. This is called from the dugout before the play by CPM. As for the pitcher not looking that is a split second decision that the coach can't make for the player. If the player thinks the guy didn't look he can go in his own but he better be safe. If you wait for a coach to tell you what to do on a play like that you are out.

When you take off the purple and gold glasses and look at our material; we have very few Bregman types who have the total package. All of our players have a weakness.

As a team when we were clicking we were fine, but when we were not clicking and things got tight our numerous weaknesses was exposed.

Now guys will improve, but Duplantis won't suddenly get a strong arm, Reid won't become fast, Beau won't be a gazelle in LF, and Deichman won't be a natural first baseman.

But I think you are saying what I am saying, we have 9 spots in the order to fight over and 8 spots on defense. Most of these spots are wide open.

I think Deichmann is the guy at 1B.
Reid will have competition at 3B.
We also need to find a C. I really like Pap, but C may not be his spot. He must close his eyes on every pitch because he has trouble catching pitches and he is usually searching for the ball off the bat.
Duplantis will have a spot, but I'm not sold on his glove in CF.
2 outfield spots will be up for grabs.

Only spots locked up are Kramer and Freeman. Duplantis and Deichamnn will start but we don't know where.

My thread got cut last night. I said this is not a very good team and is the least talented team in 20 years. They got hot for 17 games against Ark and TN bottom dwellers and then got hot in tourn. The regional was not a very tuff regional and they just got beat by a much better team in CCU.

The biggest complain I have about the Super Regional is the late start times for the games

I was also disappointed in the start times but my main issue was that one of LSU's biggest advantages at the box this time of year could be the Louisiana heat and by starting at 8pm that advantage is negated. Maybe it wouldnt have made a difference but CCU is not exactly a southern school/location and i doubt they have played very many games in the kind of heat and humidity in a South La summer.

Deichman needs a ton of work there. He struggles on ground balls, he strays too far from the base at times, his foot work is poor, and he doesn't know the little nuances like meeting the throw from the pitcher on a pickoff so he can create an angle to throw to second to get the stealing baserunner.

Yes he will.

I wonder if he's too tall sometimes. He lacks a lot of things at catcher. Good hands blocking ability and athleticism.

He is a LFer.

Yes, and we have plenty of DH types.

Freeman is a stud at second base, but if he goes its wide open.

Robinson had a great season, but he's not a three hole guy.
