I get that you don't want to extend the tournament, but I also think it is bogus. I mean if LSU loses the next one to a team they already beat and has to pack their bags while MSU or Florida got a second chance it is BS. If the idea is to shorten the tourney and there is single elimination at any point, make it single elimination all the way through. In which case it is LSU and Ole Miss in the championship and all seems pretty fair to me.

I think the SEC tournament should be 8 teams, and identical setup to Omaha with the exception of 3-game championship series. It's an excellent test-run for Omaha.
So to answer your question, I say do away with Day1, and double elimination all the way through until the championship game.

The reason for them expanding to 12 teams is to try to get more than 8 teams into the NCAA tournament. The argument has been made before about why should the #9 team from the SEC get into regionals if they couldn't even make the SEC tournament.
My only gripe about the format is that the losers' bracket doesn't flip sides. Ole Miss should play the Florida/State winner, and LSU should play the aTm/Vandy winner.
