everyone in the SEC knows from looking at him this year that if you put pressure on him there is a great chance that he will make mistakes or get sacked
If you put pressure and hit every quarterback in the ncaa, they will make mistakes and take sacks

People act like Mett is the only qb who plays poorly when pressured consistently.

Everything he does wrong is easily fixable with the right guidance. Pocket presence, and putting a 1/2 second of more air/arc on his deep throws.

Should have been past that after the first few games.

I agree completely

I agree as well. I also feel these should be easily corrected through the offseason and spring practice.

With more confidence, I think he can start hitting some more of those passes. The games where he got in a rhythm this season, he was nearly unstoppable, only problem was these didn't happen until the tail end of the year.

All the statement below means absolutely nothing because Mett CANNOT scramble. Where are those stats? It was obvious when he did the naked bootleg against Ole Miss 2 seasons ago and looked like he ran a 6.5 forty falling down on the half yard line. He must improve drastically or LSU's offense will suck again.

I don't know what these guys are expecting here with Mettenberger. He doesn't have very good pocket presence, but the OLine never gave him much time. The dude was lights out when he wasn't on his arse most of the season. No faith in Mettenberger? Despite the shitty flow of our offense and the elementary offense we ran, he still put up more completions, more yards, higher YPA, higher completion % and less INTs than Matt Flynn did in 2007. Flynn 07 quote:Matt Flynn 202-359 2407 56.3% 6.71 21td 11int 125.8 Mettenberger 12 quote:Zach Mettenberger 207-352 2609 58.8% 7.41 12td 7int 128.3 Russell 05 quote:JaMarcus Russell 188-311 2443 60.5% 7.86 15td 9int 136.6 Im obviously omitting Russell 06 and the last 4 years. For a first year starter, he was solid for the most part of the season. Yes the tds weren't there, but we also shut down the passing game in the redzone for most of the season, especially early on. It was his first year starting, and we were a defensive stop away from playing tonight. We will return almost all starters on offense with the addition of getting Faulk back, who was our best OLineman coming into the season. We will be fine on offense next season with Mett. Protect him, and we have potential to see a 3000 yard 20 td season out of him.

Why must we have a qb who can scramble?

The way the line protected this year, no matter how good of a scrambler he was, he would've been sacked.

Very few of Mett's sacks were coverage sacks this season, they were 2 seconds and he was hit.

ETA: A qb who moves in the pocket is all we need, and yes Mett needs a lot of work in that area.

All we have heard for the last 2 years was how we just needed a true pocket passer and we would be better. Now we need a scrambling qb again.....

Not until he can't complete a deep pass. Or a short pass.

A coach should know their QB's strengths and weaknesses an play to that to some degree. I think he will be better next season

More concerned about O line injuries, experience and depth. Mett seems capable if given the protection.

I have absolute faith in Mettenberger (if he does). I'll even make a prediction: next year, he will make a key first down by running the ball to win a game....because nobody expects it.

Yes. I thought he looked good this year. I saw the play calling change dramatically this year as the QB play improved. The line attrition was a problem and a bad break, though.

I'd like to see him float the deep balls a little more next year. It allows the DB to recover, but it prevents all those overthrows too.

I think the offense really goes next year (BTW I was a skeptic this year). Mainly worried about our defensive interior. One nice thing: Chavis' scheme is so robust that he can dial up the blitzes and cover for a lack of run stuffing. And we should have the DBs to man up.

If we want to win 8-10 games and then wiff a bowl game, he's great! If we want to be contenders, he has to go!

He acknowledged he was wrong. A key trademark of Miles and those who defend him passionately is an overwhelming and absolute belief in Miles and the inability to question or adapt to anything regardless of how overwhelming the evidence supports a need to do so. They are the creationist, if you will, who stick to their guns regardless of information that contradicts their stance. the more information that exists that supports evolution, the deeper they dig in their heels. OP's question is valid imo bc he recognizes retrospectively that Jefferson wasn't the answer.
