Get an RCA 75 mile range UHF / VHF combo outside antenna from Walmart. You’ll need the combo as CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX use different ones (I think it’s just CBS that is the lone user of one and the other 3 work off the same type…. Either way, this combo works great) Catches tons of digital local channels off the towers. $40 and call it a day. I cut my chord long ago and it’s the only thing I use for local channels. The towers are 55-60 miles away and come in crystal clear. I used a smaller old satellite dish behind mine and the signals are super clear even in a thunderstorm.

Direct tv is outdated. Hulu or youtube is way better

Like several have said in this thread, your first and BIGGEST issue is that you still have Direct TV
Even my parents ditched DirecTV this year (no more NFL Sunday Ticket). If old people can do it, anyone can.

I’ve been in the pay TV biz since 05. I work very closely with DIRECTV, DISH and others.
1. This will get done soon. It’s the dead of summer.
2. It’s a no win situation for the providers. These stations are losing their arse since they have fewer viewers therefore in this case they are asking for 130% raise from their old deal with DIRECTV.
If DTV says ok then it sets the tone for future negotiations and they have to raise the price and possibly lose customers.
If they say no and drop the channel until it’s a more realistic number then people get pissed and possibly drop DTV. Nobody ever blames the network.

Buy a good outdoor TV antenna with amplifier. Download the RCA signal app. Use it to point the antenna towards your local TV tower
Enjoy all major networks in HD
I’ve watched the Saints on Fox this way for 5 years now

Granted I hardly watch tv so maybe an avid couch potato might be able to poke holes in it, but far exceeded my expectations. #2 on that top 50 list you posted.

That is what I did. I have a 6ft or so outdoor antenna in my attic that is amplified. Get 40 or more channels on every tv in my house.

NBC has been out for almost a year here in BR on Uverse.
I ditched DIRECTV for this very reason. Didn't really affect me much until we got to the spring and I wanted to watch The Players Championship on NBC. Ditched DIRECTV for YouTubeTV and haven't looked back since. Way cheaper as well.

I hate Directv for just this reason—always release this panic tactic.
You must hate every type of satellite and cable provider, then. Because this happens on all of them come contact renegotiation time. Over the years I have had it happen on Cox, DirecTv, and LUSFiber TV. Friends have had it happen on Dish and I have seen online moaning from other service provider customers online.
Particularly true with ABC/Disney/ESPN due to the breadth of channels they provide. Also saw it happen with Fox News several years back.

Pretty sure an antenna just receives the signal, the digital tuner is in the TV that converts the signal to display the content.
Yeah, I was told that, but received many more stations when replacing my analog with $100 digital after the switchover back then.

For everyone hyping up streaming services like YouTube TV and Hulu, yes, it's a better option now but they will run into the same issues as DirecTV and Dish as contracts with programmers come up for renewal.
YouTube TV for sure is much more expensive than it was when it originally launched and this is due to the rising costs the programmers charge them to broadcast their channels. The contacts are usually 3 years and go up in price with every renewal.
They have two options.
1. Renew the contacts at a higher cost and pass that cost to the customer. Which the customer then bitches that their bill is too high.
2. Negotiate with the programmers to minimize the increase in order to keep your bill as close as possible to the same as it currently is. This sometimes means losing a channel for a period of time during the negotiation, which the customer also bitches about.

I live in the Atlanta area and we have not had the ABC affiliate on Dish since the beginning of the last college football season. The days of cable and satellite companies eventually caving to the demands of local channels are over. The realities of the economic situation are no longer the same. For one thing, venture capital companies are buying up local stations and overplaying their hands with unrealistic demands. That just exacerbates the overall environment in which it’s getting harder and harder to compete with streaming options. They have to reduce costs if they have any chance of surviving.
