For as long as I can remember, any time a train goes by the Box, Jim Hawthorn would make a joke about how the "ole whatever time (8:07, for instance) is right on time."

Lyn just made the same old man joke. Did he rip that from Jim or did Jim lift it from Lyn?

It was definitely Jim at the old box. Not sure how long ago but before 2003.

I'd pick Hawthorne. I remember hearing that on the radio and thinking it was hilarious when I was a kid. That has to be before Lyn Rollins started doing LSU games because almost all of them weren't televised.

It might be a common joke for many old broadcasters though, I don't know.

These kids today.. we were doing that bit on WPRG (now KLSU) back in the early 80's when Jim Engster, Steve Schneider and others were doing LSU BB play by play (in stereo) when no one else was. Good times, and loud audio.

Can anyone confirm Chris Blair making the joke to keep the tradition alive?

I don't know about the joke, but they definitely forgot Rudy Macklin as far as LSU retired jerseys. Lyn mentioned that with Todd Walker being inducted, he would make 11 retired numbers. Baseball would have 4 and there were 7 more amongst the other sports. Ronnie named 6 and forgot about Rudy. Then Lyn said, "good job, 6 for 6" and the never mentioned it again. I know it's no big deal, but come on man. How can you be an LSU broadcaster and not know the LSU legends.

I'll listen for it. I listen to the radio stream of all the games, but I can't remember if Blair does it or not.

Same for us in the early '90s when we did pre-SEC games (during basketball/baseball overlap). That was before the LSU network took them all over around '97 or so (Hawthorne).

With all due respect, it was low-hanging fruit and we were probably the only ones who thought it was funny.

The train bit always reminds me of staying at the Prince Murat with my family when I was a kid and hearing those tug boat blasts on the river all night.

I remember listening to the games on KLSU back in the day when I was a student and couldn't make it to a game. KLSU filled a void in an era when not all baseball games were broadcast on radio and the students did an admirable job

Though it was not broadcast in the 60's and 70's, there was a standing rule that when the train came by, and there was a runner on second base, the pickoff was on every other pitch, since the runner couldn't hear the coach, and because the engineer on the train blew the whistle at that time. Picked off some runners.
