I had a similar injury in high school. I was hit in the face with an 85 mph pitch and broke bones in my face. Very painful and a lot of swelling. Lora tabs were the only thing that helped for weeks. I think he will be out awhile. There is also a mental adjustment. I was a little jittery when I finally did get back to the plate.

did it require surgery?

With all due respect, Greg Deichmann is on another level of manhood.

I'm all about Deichmann playing asap but it seems like an unnecessary risk at this point in this season to have him play the next 2-3 weeks. It's one thing if this way May but we need him to be fully healthy for conference play

All kinds of devices to prevent further injury. I think it could either way. Rest or continue playing. We only have to wait until Thursday to find out the answer. No need to continue to speculate when only the his coaches and doctors know the entire scope of the injury.

Being that it is a face injury I don't see how playing will hurt it more besides the obvious if he gets hit in the face or smiles too hard from blasting home runs.

Hopefully Deichmann can continue the tradition of going on an absolute All SEC Level Tear after getting hit in the face. See Chris Chinea and KRob (master of catching the ball with his face)

Baserunning.

If he gets hurt in a collision (basically, if he has to slide head first at all along with many other scenarios), then lots of people will second guess him playing before the bones have a chance to heal at all.

It is a face. You dont use your face bones for sports. Just keep playing. Nor risk at all

While this may make sense in words, it's just not how things are when you go out and play. Dives back for a pick off move and tag on the shoulder, harmless. But his head jerks a little and the helmet applies too much pressure to the cheekbone.

My point really comes down to: why risk it?

No diving required when you're smashing HRs and stand up doubles. I guess maybe if he tried to stretch on into a triple.

If he was your son, would you want him to risk playing?

Trust me, I want this more than anyone. So much, that I want to make sure he's doing it in May and June. Don't care so much about Air Force.

Don't try to reason with ell_13, he's always right.

You're seriously trying to make this about me right now? Because all I'm saying is that playing this weekend would be too risky? I've really fricked your mind up, haven't I?

Guys, my it "is only face bones" was sarcastic

An injury like this should really be up to the comfort level of the player I would imagine

Because he's the centerpiece of your offense and when that guy is cleared to go, you let him go.

Eh. The player will almost always try come back before he's ready. It's up to the adults in charge to make that call, imo.
