Woodley was one of my fav LSU qb's, since I grew up in that time range

Probably played his best game as a Tiger in the Tangerine Bowl (Mac's last game) vs Wake...came out and jumped all over them

the stories I read in later years were sad. Never want that kind of thing to happen to a Tiger and it's why I try and supress my disappointment at times with the team and players. They are human and we have zero idea what they are like in real life, what issues they may have or whatever

RIP Mr Woodley

Awesome quarterback who split time with Steve E. Wonder. David was a raging alcoholic and eventually died from the disease. Tragic.

Well, he was a good college QB. "Awesome" is a term I would reserve for guys like the one who took his place (Marino). Woodley was not a legitimate NFL starter. As someone else posted, he was a placeholder in Miami. That was a great Miami team, though. It's a shame they had no quarterbacking. In that way they were very similar to LSU's squad in 2011.

I had a couple of classes with him back in the late 70s. Quiet and introspective guy. Rarely heard him talk. Split time with Steve Ensminger in Cholly Mac's 2-QB system. Sad to see him die so young.

I did not know David well but I knew the Woodley family and can add some personal info:

His parents were devout Catholics and had 4 or 5 kids as I recall. So even though Dad was a lawyer they were not rich. All of the kids, including David were extremely intelligent and outstanding students.

None of the other kids besides David were athletes. The parents were not really interested in athletics. So, it was a strange situation for an NFL QB to grow up in.

David played for an very bad C.E. Byrd HS FB team. After he graduated they barely won a game a year.

The oddest thing his family told me was about his taste in music. He was a teen of the 60s when rock was big. The British invasion. Yet, he liked 50s music. Think hot rods, the big bopper and 'who wrote the book of love.'

His brain power is what caused him to start for Miami at such a young age. Shula said "I never saw a rookie QB absorb a playbook so fast."

Zach (or anyone else who knew David),

I'm actually a cousin of David's through marriage, but did not know him well. The way people seem to describe him makes me think he might have had Asperger's syndrome, which unfortunately runs in my family.

Does anyone think he could have had this?

Doc,

It's rare that anyone writes something sincere on a message board, but in all seriousness, if you have that many similarities to Woodley, seek help.

My brother and son both have Aspergers and the world can be a very difficult and cruel place without medication. I know it's a personal decision, but I hope you can deal with social anxiety and stress better than Woodley.

Ehh, I'm already through all that for the most part.

I'm definitely on the mathy side of the autism spectrum, but I was never really that far over, and in any case, it just made me seem sort of weird when I was like 8 or 9, and I mostly just grew out of it. It's not like anybody would ever notice anything weird about me other than to say that I seemed really introspective, which of course was true.

Really, with my earlier comment, I was thinking about all the stuff about coming from an unusually poor and religious Catholic family, with lots of intelligence, some of the crazy drinking as an undergrad, and being the only sibling in a large family who was athletic.

There comes with all that a lot of frustration from constantly obsessing about perfectionism while coming face to face with the impossibility of ever reaching it. All the while sort of feeling nervous and outside the crowd wherever you go, which doesn't necessarily mean you don't like the people on your team or anything, but you just don't want to stay around them for too long at one time ... if that makes any sense.

Woodley was from North Louisiana. (Hardly would matter in todays game, but for some reason it mattered back then).

Not so sure. I could easily see a N. LA vs S. LA QB controversy nowadays. They've broken out at LSU over less.

Woodley story, from an OL of that era who came back a few years later to finish his degree and was in a few of my classes:

LSU vs Kentucky, Tigers come out flat and play down to the level of competition They're winning, but haven't look good all game. Woodley comes into the huddle with a couple of minutes left in the game. "Ok guys, we need a TD to cover the spread." Tigers march down the field like a well-oiled machine and score.
