Comparison(s) to Orgeron's career?

Has there ever been an example of a coach who was a tremendous assistant that was given a shot as a head coach, failed horribly, became an assistant again only to be given another head coaching opporuntiity that ended up being successful in their 2nd stint?
Not at all a shot at Coach O, or insuiating anything; I'm merely curious. I also know every situation is unique.

Pretty sure that every head coach was an assistant beforehand. So now the question you are asking is if it is possible to succeed as head coach if your first stint doesn't go well. Happens all the time.

thanks for this post. what this board REALLY needs is about a thousand posts on how fricked up our hire was and how coach O is a piece of shite.
and we need to hear this daily until next years season starts. it's very refreshing and needs to be iterated at least a million more times.

Not all that often.
Based on the OP's question, I looked up all the coaches with 200 career wins or a national title. There were a few that had losing records in their first job, but even those had at least one good season.
Mack Brown is the only reason for optimism from the 200 Club. His best season at Tulane was 6-6.
The only coach to fail completely in his first gig and then win a national title was Chizik. Everyone else was either in his first gig or was poached.

Not really. Surely there are a few examples, but I think you're really stretching to say it happens all the time. And O didn't just fail at Ole Miss, it was a disaster. 3-21 in conference games. 0-8 his last year there.

And note that Gus Chiggins was pretty successful to start, and then Auburn took a steep nose dive after some turnover among the assistants.

I asked a very fair question not laced with an ounce of insuiation. I was genuinely curious.

Completely forgot Mack was at Tulane.
Would take a Mack-like run in a heartbeat.
His 2001-2009 run was as good as any in the country.

Everyone, even CEO says he was bad at Ole Piss. What was the situation the two years prior and the two years after CEO was HC?

Didn't we just fire a guy for a run that was almost identical? Given that, our expectation surely must be higher.

Another thread pointed out Gene Stallings was the closest by comparison.
