CFN Questions Titans logic considering taking a QB at #2.......

quote:

Seriously, what’s wrong with Zach Mettenberger?
It’s one thing if another Andrew Luck or a Manning was there for the taking with the second pick, but Marcus Mariota isn’t a better pro prospect than Tennessee Titan Zach Mettenberger is going into his second year.

quote:

What if you gave a 6-5, 244-pound bomber with a big arm, say, Amari Cooper or Kevin White to throw to? What if Bishop Sankey – the first running back taken in last year’s draft – stays healthy and becomes a solid option to take the heat off?

I agree, unless the Titans and needing a mobile QB or want to do something more versatile than a drop back passer. Metts arm is stronger than Mariottas imo.

I agree. Zach just needs protection, and a running game. Look to the o-line tenn.

I just can't see Mett staying healthy for an entire season

And here’s the best part about all of this – Mettenberger costs mere pocket change. If he stinks, he stinks – it’s not a franchise killer.

Mettenberger counts as a mere $541,279 against the cap this season and paltry $1.45 million total over the next two seasons.

This may be the best reason to continue to develop Mett.

Tennessee needs to trade back. Someone will pony up for the second spot. They have a lot of needs and need to help out the qb, not draft another and waste a pick.

why? i hope you dont expect to see Marcus Mariota stay healthy...Mariota would take more hits than Mett will

I see the NYJ, Philly or San Diego trading with Tennessee.

Also, Tennessee could easily select Mariota and then trade him later on. Similar to the Manning for Rivers draft.

mehh id have to disagree JBeam...just because Mett cant escaping the pocket like some can doesnt make Mariota better IMO...Mett has all the intangibles but that and you build a line around him and he can be dangrous...Running QBs just dont make it in the NFL long...never has and never will

If he stinks and Tennessee goes 2-14 again. Whisenhunt is probably out of a job.

Agree completely. I'll go further, Mett's a better pro prospect than Mariota IMO.

Health is the only question mark he has the way I see it. He will carve out a nice career if he can stay healthy.

he's out of a job regardless of who's starting if the Titans go anywhere near 2-14 again.

Mettenberger hasn't played a full season of football since '12 season. He's currently 0-6 as a starter.

I agree with you the majority of you that Tennessee has other issues [specifically oline & defense]. But, Mettenberger isn't the long term answer in Tennessee. If Whisenhunt is smart. He drafts Mariota and then trades him to San Diego for Rivers and some other pieces. That way Whisenhunt has one of his guys under center.

Personally, I think the NFL is moving a way from pure pocket passers like Mett. We've seen what an aggressive defense can do to a quarterback who has zero mobility [Manning vs. Seahawks].
