misdirection and runs to the outside...
Right because Bama's defense isn't well coached, disciplined, or fast. Those runs to the outside and misdirection will do wonders :(

Mett will have a breakout performance unlocking the running game and gassing the gumps by 4Q.

Can we beat Bama the old-school way?
Will our starting QB be stoned?

I think it's absolutely possible. But, in order to do so, LSU has to make Bama at least think about the pass. At this point, there is nothing on film to suggest Bama would even worry about LSU passing the ball. If they go play action and complete more than say 10 pass plays for decent yardage, then Bama will be forced to play back a bit to respect the pass. If Mett can't find a way to complete passes or if receivers get a case of the dropsies, then LSU is in for a very, very long night. Without play action or the use of the TEs in the passing game, LSU will got their asses whooped. It'll be a repeat of 1/9 with the defense holding strong until they wear out late in the game. Better hope for some innovative play calling and/or passing routes to get guys open.

You have to beat Bama "the old school way". Hardly anybody beats Bama if they have to throw the ball much more than 20 times. That is history since Saban was there.
That, however, may not be the case this year. Bama is essentially a passing team this year as opposed to a rushing team. The only two teams who had much of a run defense were Ole Miss and WKU. They held Bama to about 105-125 yards net rushing. They also got some sacks and even had some interception because of this.
AL worked on the rushing game in their Bye Week and came out and rushed for 318 yards against MO and about 230 against TN. It will be interesting to see how they do rushing against MSU.
At this point in time I'm believe LSU can and will easily make AL one dimensional. I believe that because as I said AL's most comfortable style this year anyway is to throw the ball. So it may be easy to get them to do just that and try and win the game that way. I believe that LSU is the first team they will play that has a D capable of making that difficult.
IMO LSU is a better running team than last year. IMO, also with Hill and Ford now established as the running back tandem and Ware being used in a lot of different ways LSU is actually better running the ball this year. Hill and Ford are backs who actually follow the blocking and run thru creases rather than bludgeon their way in. The running game is now more diversified. The OL is more aggressive.
The big problem is LSU in the red zone. IMO the passing game is coming around, though it can be a lot better. But despite only 40% completion against A&M, LSU is expanding the O. There were new patterns used, the receivers got open and pass protection was better.
The QB accuracy left a little to be desired, but a lot of that was due to the wind. Mett "drilled" the ball all day with a strong 45 degree cross wind and essentially protected it from an interception. Manziel threw some touch passes and 4 were intercepted. Actually another one should have been intercepted.
AL lost a lot of run stoppers last year and and I said until they play someone who has a strong running game I am not sure how good they are at stopping the run.
Much has been made about AL decisively beating everyone they played. But even though the won comfortably against Ole Miss and WKU, they did not beat them as they were projected to do.
I am not sold on AL being a the #1 Team yet. IMO they have not played anyone who was any good especially at the time they were playing them. They will be favored over LSU even with LSU being at home, but IMO LSU has an excellent opportunity to win the game if they can fix the red zone problem and imrove just a little in passing.

I tend to agree that we probably have to have a good passing day statistically to win this game.
I also think it would be incredibly gratifying if we won this the "old-school" way... imagine what it would be like if the teams were locked in a tight, low-scoring game, say 6-3 into the late 3rd quarter, and Miles stubbornly had run the ball 90% of the plays. People anxious and edgy, griping, cursing, ... and then Hill and Ware start to get 4-5 yds a carry instead of 1-2. On every run. And they are falling forward at the end of those runs.
And then Ford comes out and rips a 15 yd gain on a sweep, and then Hill for a long score (maybe 25-30), right up the gut, as the commentators are trying to say we need to pass before Saban shuts us down.
We'd all be screaming frick YEAH and power-clapping with Les.

probably not against bama, too big in the front 7 to just ground and pound all game.
agreed if so we would have won last year NC with this philosophy.
We have virtually equal defenses but LSU has a dumb offense philisophy. Bama is about 25% better on offense ergo they have an advantage over us.

Actually Saban has been quoted at saying the best way to attack fast defenses are (traps counter, and quick pa passes)
Lsu virtually nevers runs those types of misdirection - hence the name dumb offense

Saban preaches defending from the inside out. His defenses will always be the most vulnerable on the edges. Runs and passes to the sideline are a much better recipe than post routes and dives from the I-form

Saban's D was and will always be susceptible to backs out the backfield to the middle of the field.

Hasn't been a problem at bama honestly, can't recall a single big play coming from this...last attempt that even comes to mind was the jefferson herp derp that mosley picked off

U could never beat a satan coached team without keeping them off balance. It would never work.

This is how we won in Tuscaloosa last year, moving to the outside on the run. Imagine the Power I, the two I backs behind the QB and then another back just to the side. Put Ware at QB and run the Triple Option. A germ of that was run against Texas A&M--touchdown. Doesn't have to be run all the time, unless it really started working well. And Ware can pass; I remember him throwing a TD pass two years ago against Auburn.
