Nola was ghastly at the plate.

Seriously?
Nola came through in the clutch quite often and was probably close to a .300 hitter for his career.

Ghastly is not the word you're looking for here.

I like Bregman and think he will continue to improve, but he's got some work to do to be as good as Nola was in the field. He will almost definitely be a better career hitter though.

come on man. Nola is the best defensive SS in LSU history.

HE made 5 errors last year....5!!!!

Bregman has 4 already.

even as a FR, Nola changed the whole dynamic of the team when he was eventually inserted full time.

i'm not even about to bash Nola. I'm just saying we haven't seen enough of Bregman to know.

While I agree that we haven't seen enough, I'd be hard pressed to believe he will ever be as good as Nola defensively. I'm pulling for him to be, but that aint an easy task. Nola looked about as natural at SS as any college player I've watched.

I'm real excited to see what Bregman brings offensively over the next couple of years though.

no argument there. I just think there has to be a reason why this guy can come in as a true freshman, start from day one and bat 3rd.

I'm just going to reserve judgment for a year ot two.

Because his bat is WAY more advanced than it should be for a college freshman, and we happened to lose our SS this offseason. Dude should be playing Minor League ball right now.

Bregman is a better all around player than most people in collegiate baseball, that is why he projected as first round talent. Not just Nola, FWIW

We are no doubt very lucky Bregman kept telling MLB teams he is going to college. HE got a call very early on in the draft offering him 7 figures to sign and he turned it down.

Mainieri and the staff thought they had a slim to none chance to keep him and that's why Ibarra was added to start at SS. Now we have another good bat in the lineup besides Ibarra (and judging based on Ibarra's defense at 3rd, thank GOD Bregman came in and is starting at SS ).

Just imagine our lineup this year without Bregman, Yocum is probably a starter at SS/3B.

Is this thread serious? Nola was a better player right now. This question is stupid. Bregman might show a ton of potential but he only played one SEC series his entire career so far. Can't you at least wait until the end of the year to make comparisons? Sure, he has more bat potential than Nola but Nola was a decent bat at the end of his LSU campaign. Nola might be the best glove I've seen in a long time at SS.

So no, Bregman is not close to being the player Nola was at the end of his career. We'll see how he progresses.

well, Bregman is leading the team in hitting....the same team that faces the same pitchers that he does. Safe to say the guy can flat out hit

Austin has a much better glove than Bregman ever will. Alex often times fields the ball on his left or right without getting in front of it which will cause him trouble in the future....luckily it has not to this point.

Bregaman is easily a better hitter at the moment, but that can change. Ask, Jacoby

ETA this is a ridiculous thread because of the sample size we are talking about

Bregman made two fantastic plays Saturday and Sunday and was hosed with two terrible calls at 1st base.

He's played less than 20 games. Give the guy a chance to build his rep on the playing fields.Potentially, yes, he looks like the real deal. Still hard for me to find anyone better than Jason Williams in his career, tho.

By the time Bregman leaves he'll be one of the greatest players in LSU history if he lives up to potential. Nola's only real asset was his glove. A corpse could have a higher batting average than he produced.

Corpses have been notoriously bad at the plate.

Nola didn't start at the beginning of his freshman year. When he did I believe he and Bregman were close in their overall play. Lets see what Bregman does over the next couple years, then we can make that comparison. Right now I'm more comfortable with the play of Bregman both in the infield, and at the plate then I was with Nola.
