wow
have we complicated this poll.
my initial idea was that the Defending National Champ should be #1 in he preseason poll....call it out of respect, out of courtesy, or it just goes with the territory...
I did not mean to imply
the true strength of the team or
that they would be the best team.
or that a subsequent poll could not be different.
I am talking what I would consider to be a "blanket" action.
If the Defending Champ is not a good team, it will self correct shortly...but it would keep another team from occupying the #1 spot prior to any games being played.
Would we be placing a team as #1 that we may all know WILL NOT END THERE at season's end?...
ABSOLUTELY.
But if everyone knows how the team got there, it does not matter..and once again
it will self correct shortly...but it would keep another team from occupying the #1 spot prior to any games being played.

I think that the BCS Champ should automatically be ranked # 1 the following season REGARDLESS of how they are perceived the following season
I couldn't agree less.

What I'm saying is that if we have the same record as USC this year, they will be ranked ahead of us in the BCS standings (unless we lose to Florida and they lose to Stanford), because of their SOS compared to ours. I know we have a tough conference schedule, but SOS looks at the overall schedule
yeah i agree with you.
but week 12 SOS is probably alot different than it was preseason

Oh, no doubt. 100% agree with you. Hell, half of the teams that give USC it's tough SOS right now could end up as busts, and S. Car and Bama could end up in the top 10.

you are entitled to your opinion....
I am looking at it from a different perspective than you

I know, they're all just opinions.
LSU doesn't go into 2008 preseason ranked #1.
You lose players. Teams change. The only way I can see you being pushed into that #1 the season After a Championship is if you return pretty much the same team.
Luckily though, the pollsters tend to look at it from my point of view.

Other than giving the defending champion respect, this is your other reason for having the rule. Why? Why do you want to keep other teams from occupying the spot? Honest question.

unfortunately the prior results from recent years do heavily affect the polls in the next year... teams like usc, ou, lsu, west va, florida, tenn, texas do get name inflation in the polls above what they may deserve when you look at players returning etc
and i do think that is wrong... not just because the preseason poll results can be badly wrong but because it can end up costing a team that started the year ranked too low
the quality of even elite football teams may vary dramatically from year to year... florida last year and the year before their national championship season comes to mind... as should lsu in 02 and 04... or osu in 01 and 03
in short i agree with the buckeye... ranking teams based on where they finished the prior year is probably wrong in too many cases to be useful or fair

Yet I am sure you find it reasonable that the team that got butt whipped returns the collection of losers (by losers I mean they lost the game), they should be borderline #1.
Sort of like putting sour milk back in the fridge... maybe it will be fresh tomorrow.
FYI: Just messin with ya

ok so say even if the defending champs get the automatic #1 spot (even though this will never happen).
what do you do with the other 24 teams? what do you base them off of?
its not like the team that won the NCG and doesnt get the preseason #1 spot is the only team that might get screwed.

How? How can it end up costing a team? You mean like Kansas last year? They weren't ranked at all and ended up climbing until they lost. Or like South Florida? Made it to #2. Times have changed. If you win, and have a legit schedule, you will climb to the top, regardless of where you started.
