What do you guys think?
Forget that LSU was the Champ.
I think that the BCS Champ should automatically be ranked # 1 the following season REGARDLESS of how they are perceived the following season Then if / when they loose, the rankings can be adjusted.

a) This would show respect and an additional perk.
b) Most importantly, it would leave some room for wiggle in the top 10. As it is now, the Cinderella # 1 ranking gives this same perk to an unproven and often undeserving team.....since they will likely not be moved from # 1 unless they loose.
If a team is not good enough to be #1 on the year following the BCS championship, they will loose and thus allow for "competition" for # 1....better than having it being controlled by the media as it is now.

To be honest, i think the first polls should come out after week 3. This garbage of predictions hurts a team (like 04 auburn).

Polls shouldn't be out until week 6...too many easy OOC games prior to week 4...after week 6 you'd know where teams should be...it's all media hype...there is no reason to have polls out so early.

Not to be rude, but I don;t think that is a good idea at all. The teams are different from one year to the next. The preseason rankings are based on the players with game experience that are coming back and their skill set. Arbitrarily ranking the previous year's champ # 1 would make no sense.

Why? 2008 has nothing to do with 2007. Players change, coaches change.

Polls shouldn't come out until like week 4.

I agree, but that's not going to ever happen.
Too much advertising/media buzz is gained when the poll is released.

I thought this may give it a little either common sense, or common practice.

I understand that and EVERYONE would know that
# 1 may/may not be accurate...but it would take the # 1 spot and leave it open without having the media dictate the school of their choice.....
if the #1 wins out...they would have deserved it.
if they do not, it will soon be obvious and by that time the # 1 spot can be filled with at least SOME football having been played.

If we had an NFL type playoff maybe but since we don't that would be even more ridiculous than the polls already are...at least voters are trying to surmise who the best teams are coming into the season instead of just rubber-stamping last year's champ...the MNC dies come the new year.

Early polls are lame but it wouldn't be as fun without them...what would we complain about?

My biggest problem is that ONCE THE MEDIA HAS CHOSEN THEIR TEAM, it is there to stay.
My idea would FORCE the #1 spot to open up... if an undeserving team were to have it.
I am talking about the previous year's Champion which would likely still be in the top 10.

The Champ should be #1 UNTIL THEY LOOSE IN THE FOOTBALL FIELD, not until they loose in the media.

I thinks that's stupid, the 2008 rankings should be about 2008.

Similar to other posters, polls should not come out before week 5.

But in your thought, I do not think we will ever see a scenario where the BCS champion goes undefeated and does not make the game the next year, regardless of whether they start in the polls and how many other undefeated there are. If OSU and OKie go undefeated and so do we, we will jump one of them.. take that to the bank and get .5% interest.

I agree....
but THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
Too many ads and magazines to be sold.
I am trying to deal with THAT reality.

I am not talking about what we would do/ not do THIS YEAR. I am talking about a CONCEPT..

What does Athlons or Sports illustrated or espn have to do with the ap poll/coaches poll coming out?

I agree with this one. Preseason polls are a joke but if you are going to insist on having such a thing then the defending champions should start where they ended up.

I 100% agree that often it is almost near impossible for preseason top 5 teams to drop in the polls unless they lose no matter how bad they look (although it has happened; 1994 Penn St. et al) and the last couple of years there have been flip-flops in the polls with undefeated teams (Texas jumping Cal 2005) but that doesn't mean last years champ should have this luxury. What makes them more worthy...because of last years record? This isn't boxing or chess for that matter...there is no reigning world champion. Every year is a do-over.

While Georgia might not end up being worthy at least they are some kind of consensus among voters taking an educated guess versus putting a paper tiger (no relation to LSU) up there.

They are having a very tough time not picking a loaded SEC team right now based upon the track record of the conference over the past number of years.

If a "system" was in-place.
# 1 would not be an issue for debate.

They are all after ratings.
When ads are sold, TV, Magazines or whatever,
their rates are based on "the size of their audience"...bigger audience, bigger rates, bigger profits.....they are all playing the same game.

You hit the nail on the head...that's my point.

I understand this, but what does the coaches poll have to do with media?

Point is, why can't the coaches poll come out after week 5 (or whenever)? The magazines, papers, etc can still have their fun in June, but the "official" poll will have actual games to judge the teams.

Where does it get posted?]

WHY ...is because the RATINGS...it is just not reality.
So let's look at the options within that reality.
As the movie said..It's about the money.
