when will people stop calling LL's inability to hit a slump?

He's a below average (being nice) hitter who occasionally gets hot

The entire lineup is messed up right now...its early. They're just getting the feel of who they want...at what batting order. Give it time. We lost a lot of hitters, its going to take awhile to find our groove and lineup.

IT'S THE SECOND WEEK OF THE SEASON!!!!

The football rationale has once again moved to baseball I see. There is a reason Mainieri has 9 guys in the starting lineup and the rest on the bench.

It is just difficult for me to see an excellent contact hitter like Mahtook hitting 7th (is PM praying LL will get on base in front of him), I have no idea as to his thinking. I would love to know PM's thinking on this and why. I honestly do beleive there are more talented players than LL sitting on the bench.

i think PM likes to spread hitting talent throughout the lineup

Does any fan of any team in any sport really ever know what the head coach is thinking?

Lets get one thing clear, no body here is questioning Mainieri or saying they could make a better lineup than him. We are merely suggesting alternatives that could possibly work out and ones that we could see him putting in place in the future. He knows if and when changes need to be made and he'll make them if it makes the team better. We're just speculating and making hypotheticals.

Since Mainieri like the alternating R/L batter scenario, I could see him tinkering and goign with something like this (assuming the same starting 9):

R Watkins
R Nola
L Dean
R Gaudet
S Gibbs
R Mahtook
L Delatte
R Hanover
L Landry

Last year Blade Dean went into a horrible slump. Should he have been benched?

No and I think Landry should be awarded more time, but make no mistake Leon is not Blake Dean.

I think Mainieri has Gaudet deep in the lineup to use him like a second clean up hitter. I agree with platooning Dishon and Landry according to the lefty or righty pitcher. I also agree it would serve us better to put Hanover further down the lineup maybe swap him with Delatte.

I said last year that I wouldn't question another one of Mainieri's moves....but I don't understand why we have Hanover at clean up instead of Gibbs. I just don't get it. And I'm sorry but I don't have any confidence in Leon Landry....especially when there are runners on base. And I think that Gaudet needs to move way up in the lineup with the way he's playing. Mahtook as well.

Marciano1, you're absolutely right in that LL cannot produce when runners are on base. He hits fine when there are 2 outs and nobody on base. But PM is going to give him longer chance than most LSU fans can swallow because he's been in the backup role patiently waiting his turn. PM awards players that are for the team. Hopefully he can come around but we both doubt it. Later he will probably put dishon in at right and Mahtook in center.

Well, LSU6969, how long is more than we can swallow? LL is certainly not major league material so that is not a PM concern. Is PM going to wait and not give some one the opportunity before SEC play starts? Your thoughts?

He has the lineup the way he does for a reason. He switches up lefties and righties. That makes it tough on opposing pitchers. I'm sure there will be slight changes this year but no significant moves. As for Gaudet he is smashing the ball right now because he is in the 8 hole. He is seeing a lot of fastballs.

Mainieri said Hanover out hit everyone coming into the season. This offseason has been big for him. By putting him at number 4 early in the season, it gives him more at bats to potentially bring that fire from the fall over. Besides, the "cleanup" term accounts for the first at bat only. Then, you have no idea who will bat forth in an inning. When SEC gets here, if he is not hitting he won't be there. As for Gibbs batting cleanup, he tried Gibbs at cleanup last year and a little the year before. Gibbs is not a cleanup hitter. He is a good 5-7 hitter. If any change needs to be made, it would be moving Matt Gaudet to cleanup. Dean has sat comfortably at the 3 hole for a long time now and will see better pitches if they fear the batter behind him. Think of Matt Clark and Blake Dean 2 years ago. Gaudet can be someone to protect dean from many walks. It's hard to win a NC though with all your best hitters hitting right next to each other. This is why Mahtook and Landry (if he starts hitting for more power) is best in the 6-7 spot.

As far as Landry, were you guys not at the game today? He had a few good hits, and a stolen base. It's early in the season. The coach sees everyone everyday. If dishon was better than him, would you think he would of gotten more time last year too? Johnny Dishon will pinch hit and pinch run a lot this season, and if he does well in practice..who knows. Landry learned last year that you need to play well the whole year or you will get benched halfway in season. But I will tell you this.. being at all the games every year, Landry is improving fundamentally. He is more patient behind the plate, not swinging just for the fences, smarter on base, and really not swinging at that high crap he did last year. If he keeps with this patience and waiting for his pitch, he will get better. If not, then there would be no more excuses for him.

I think he is not seeing it as landry getting on base for mahtook but as spreading threats through out line up and mahtook getting on base for gaudet (who is absolutly crushing the fastballs he is seeing in the 8 hole)

Well, one thing I am sure we can all agree with and that is there is certainly nothing "conventional" about PM's batting line up. The guy leading the team in hitting stats hits 8th and the guy hitting 4th continues to struggle in that spot and messing the whole damn thing up is LL hitting 6th.
