So... you're telling me basketball gets a welfare check from the NCAA?

Not sure what it is tbh. I don't have access to lsu financials and can't see what it is. Is either a pooled revenue, or unc or duke have a negative balance here.

What I do know is without this $2m. Basketball would net a marginal contribution

ETA: I have never seen another income stmt for another basketball program. Just trying to debunk the op

ETA:eta: it looks like this money comes from Kentucky and Texas a&M advancing so far in the NCAA tournament

Do they get a bigger check. Thank you. And once they get another coach, they will become a consistent winner, and tournament participant. You may not come to the PMAC, but 10-15 thousand of us will. I love the baseball team, but they won't ever make more money than the Bball team.

Yes basketball is #2 everywhere in the country. But you thought the numbers were from this current season. Really an ignorant thread you started.

Why would I think the numbers were from the current season when the season isn't even over? Baseball season is just getting started.

I made two separate statements and you just lumped them together. All I said was that television money made it possible to have a terrible losing basketball team and still allow the University to make money. Do you doubt that basketball will still come up with a positive revenue for this season? I will take that bet.

And OP, for that matter...

People defend baseball on this board because it's obviously a better product than basketball. Not because they think it makes more money. Does anyone really think that? Because that's factually incorrect. You can't even argue it. You absolutely CAN argue, however, that more people simply LIKE baseball better than basketball.

And you say "a lot" of people want basketball gone. There's maybe a handful of people, but "a lot?" I've seen it posted maybe 2 or 3 times tops. And racism? Please give me an example because I think that's bullshite.

That is only because of the huge amount of SEC TV money for basketball. If you looked only at revenue from fans attending the games, it wouldn't even be close and I'm sure basketball would be losing allot of money.

We have seen baseball fans repeatedly jump into basketball posts and make snide remarks for years. Like for instance, "I didn't even know we had a team." or "Who cares, can't wait until baseball etc. But my post was rather innocent and only compared the two by money. Rather than admit the truth of that matter, you baseball fans changed the whole intent of what I stated back to popularity, home game attendance etc. none of which I made any remarks or claims about.

Yes it is TV money that makes basketball profitable. I said that was the reason in my post and then a bunch of you great thinkers repeated it as a reason to invalidate my post as if you had just come up with the thought.

If basketball ever puts out an entertaining, winning team like the Maravich, Shaq, Chris Jackson years again then home game attendance would soar and overall revenue because they would go tot he NCAA tournament.

So it is not that fans don't care about basketball as much as baseball. They just don't care for the terrible teams that LSU has had lately. Baseball will fall to third in every conceivable way if LSU puts an enjoyable basketball team on the floor.

It make for interesting reading if someone removed TV money from the revenue and ranked the schools and the sports at these schools.

Basketball is only due to the NCAA tournament windfall all schools get whether they participate or not.

From a fans in the seats and ticket sales at LSU only, baseball is king over hoops and has been for awhile now. Baseball could charge more and still put butts in the seats over hoops.

LSU basket has finished a season averaging 9,500+ attendance four times since 2000. This year will not be number 5.
thats 18 seasons with 3 different ADs and 3 different head coaches.

LSU baseball has averaged over 9,500 attendance EIGHT times since 2009. thats double what basket ball has done in less than half the time.

at LSU, Baseball is bigger than basketball.

sorry if that hurts your feelings, but it's true.

there is no reason why it should be this way, but it is.
Basketball has every advantage possible to be bigger, but for whatever reason it hasn't been able to here.

they get the better TV deal, they get 1st dibs on the radio calls, they get highlights on SportCenter even for meaningless early season games. They get a bigger check from the NCAA.

Who gives a shite! LSU basketball sucks no matter how much money technically they make. Plain and simple. Thank god we have our baseball program to alleviate some of the embarrassment that the basketball team puts on us every year.

This is why you can put out as mediocre a product as basketball was this year, have no one attend the games and still make a nice chunk of change.

The NCAA Basketball Tournament makes tons more money than the College World Series. It's just a fact!

All of you who complain about tv money given to basketball should realize that the NCAA combines that money from all sports and the AD divides it up. I haven't seen the baseball budget but it is hard to believe that they don't get some of that money also. Here is where the tv money comes from and how much it was in 2014-15.

The Southeastern Conference will distribute $436.8 million out of an NCAA-record $455.8 million in revenues between its 14 institutions, it was announced Friday.

Each league member will receive $31.2 million -- an increase of more than $10 million per school from last year's payout of $20.9 million per school.

The SEC made $455.8 million in total revenue based on the revenue-sharing plan for the 2014-15 fiscal year, which ends Aug. 1. However, $19 million was retained by institutions that participated in bowl games last season.

The total amount of the distribution is composed of revenue generated from the SEC Network, televised football, bowl games, the SEC football championship, televised basketball, the SEC men's basketball tournament, NCAA championships and a supplemental surplus distribution.

NOTE: Money came from SEC Network which includes televised baseball games and also NCAA championships which would include the College World Series.

So I don't know how Aleva distributes it among the various sports but blame him if you think baseball doesn't get it's fair share.
