We got embarrassed a couple of times after 2000 ,Iowa comes to mine but yes you are right !
yes and still do. just think back to Auburn 2014. really no excuse for that to happen anymore. not with the talent we have on this team. getting beat by a touchdown or two is one thing, but getting shelled like that is inexcusable.

Arnsparger was damn good COACH and he held his assts accountable for COACHING. he set standards that were above his predecessor. BUT, it was really Bob Broadhead that showed LSU it's potential. Before his arrival, LSU athletic department was CHEAP.
we hired HC's on the cheap and asst coaches on the cheap. the TAF either didn't exist or wasn't aggressive in pricing.
the problem was Arnsparger wanted to be athletic director and LSU (sans Bertman) doesn't allow ex coaches to be AD. he went to Florida where he was exactly what he would have been at LSU; a semi retired figurehead. he would NOT have exploited LSU's potential.
The concept that LSU didn't play great football before Arnsparger is a myth. it was about MONEY that LSU finally grasped and begin to be more of a national player and Arnsparger didn't have a damn thing to do with that.
Arnsparger had some great players and he knew how to coach them.

1. Arns was a good HC, but the trajectory of LSU Football did not change MUCH when he was here.
2. LSU went 8-3-1, 9-2-1, and 9-3 when he was at LSU. Three bowl losses and we lost badly each time. And, the only reason we got that 1984 Sugar bid is because Florida, the SEC's best team that year, was on probation.
3. I think LSU would have gotten better MAYBE had Arns stayed 4-5 more years, but that is pure speculation.

The most ingenious, yet self-centered and egotistical prick in the history of LSU athletics.
That, sir, was an understatement. The only thing he had going for him was a cute daughter.

Perhaps, but Coach Arnsparger bolting for the Florida AD job left us with Archmanardo.
Archer: good guy, good assistant, not head coach material.
DiNardo: There was no telling what would have happened if he had not run Carl Reese off and hired that fricking idiot Lou Tepper.

We tied them in 84 opener 24 all!

Except for that Louisiana State University instead of LSU and the earlier knockoffs to get east coast news coverage
Thank goodness this was my college years, but a win over Nebraska would have been nice.

Arnsparger was the first really good coach that actually coached at LSU. (This doesn't count the coaches from the 50's etc since I don't know shite about them) After he left it was a shite show for more than a decade. Crap coach after crap coach.

I don't think Brodhead ran him off. They butted heads a lot but could, ultimately, work together when it counted.
What Arnie probably grew tired of was the "catastrophe syndrome" from some LSU fans that also gave Saban needless headaches.
Oh for God sakes.
When are you morons going to give this shite a rest? The fans had nothing whatsoever to do with Arnsparger leaving.

After the Miami of Ohio loss, the fans really got down on him, and he probably figured that he didn't need to be taking all of that flack after all he had done for the program and then took a more serious look at Florida's AD offer.
What an idiotic assessment of the situation. You really don't have a fricking clue.

Sure we had 5 decent years from the time he came, and I know he was only here for 3 seasons, but we were still prone to be embarrassed on any Saturday by a good team.
From 1984 to 1988, the only real embarrassment at the hands of a good team was getting shelled 44-3 by Miami in 1988. The bowl losses were 28-10, 21-7 and 30-15 under Arnsparger (the latter two were not as close as the scores), 23-10 under Archer (he also had a bowl win), and there was also a closer-than-the-score-looked 20-0 loss to Florida in 1985 (10 of their points came in the final minutes when we had to go for it on 4th down deep in our own territory).
We were also embarrassed a couple of times by bad teams. Miami of Ohio in 1986 and Mississippi State in 1984 come to mind.
But outside of that Miami game (and remember that was two years after Arnsparger had left), we never got blown out during that time the way we have since 2000...
2000: 41-9 to Florida
2001: 44-15 to Florida
2002: 31-0 to Alabama
2004: 45-16 to Georgia
2008: 51-21 to Florida
2013: 38-17 to Alabama
2014: 41-7 to Auburn
(dis)honorable mention:
2002: 26-8 to Va. Tech, 35-20 to Texas
2005: 34-14 to Georgia
2008: 31-13 to Ole Miss
2011: 21-0 to Alabama
2014: 17-0 to Arkansas

What do you think it was? You seem pretty adamant it had nothing to do with fans.
I'm not saying who is right or wrong because I don't know. I believe he wanted to be AD and LSU wasn't allowing it since he was a past coach. Florida did and his ties from the Dolphins days set that up.
And what would everyone's response be if LSU lost 3 BCS bowls in a row today? Tiger Stadium and campus would explode.

If you remember that was the 11 straight games without a break in the Katrina season when the schedule at the beginning of the year got all screwed up. Miles first year.
