That's because you're supposed to put a question mark at the end of a question:

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The last two lines are asking if the flag is flying over the "land of the free and home of the brave."

It is true that people really don't pay attention to the words to the Star Spangled Banner.

I'm glad somebody answered this question quickly. It is sad that any American would not know this.

Last year at the Auburn football game they actually replaced the "brave" with "tigers" on the LCD display

If it makes you feel better, you aren't the first person to post that question on here.

Of course, that also means that more than a few people don't know that about the national anthem. There are actually only four sentences, and three of them are questions.

Its supposed to be there. The first phrase is "Oh say CAN you see?"

The entire anthem is a question.

suck my balls.

that hardly makes me any less of a patriotic American. Judge that by my ideals, not by whether or not I realized the last two lines of a song ask a question or not. I sang the damn song and at the last second looked up and saw "And the Home of the Brave?" on the jumbotron and it struck me as bizarre. fricking sue me you prick.

Your Mom must be so proud of your command of the English language on this special day.

Do you think someone would get criticized or cheered if they actually replaced brave with TIGERS while singing the National Anthem at an LSU game?
