Was it not the same contract that he's signed multiple times during his tenure here?

This was about money.

I'm basing my opinion on what I heard on the radio last night.

The Miles clause was the problem
it not being 4 years was the problem.

I'm only repeating what I've heard.

First, when you're running an athletic program that is one of the 5-6 most profitable in the NCAA you don't hesitate to keep high quality defensive football coaches - if they're wanted. What's being lost is that perhaps this is Miles' way of bringing in new blood.

When you're charged with filling a 100k seat football stadium you need the fan base buying into the direction of the program. It looks from what's written on here and is discussed on local sports talk radio there is a real uneasiness about the direction of the football program - especially on offense but also to an extent the defensive philosophy.

If Miles told Aleva do what it takes to keep Chavis and he didn't then someone needs to alert the BOS immediately and Aleva should be gone. But if Miles was in agreement about the contract offered then clearly he wanted to bring in new blood.

Whether it works out or not depends on the hire. From what I've read here I think Pendergrast seems the best candidate if you want to maintain the program as making players NFL ready.

You can say all you want about being fiscally responsible...so are you also saying that ATM is fiscally irresponsible? ATM is paying it!

I think Alleva sucks but this was the right call to not pay him. I think Chavis will regret leaving this defense next year. A&M has a lot of rebuilding on that side of the ball.

there's almost no way that ANY contract language in a contract that is going to pay someone $1.4 million a year is bad enough to make someone leave unless:

A) they want to leave

B) they don't get what they want.

Chavis was previously fine with the salary he was making since he signed previous contracts for that amount of money. So either he wanted to leave or not getting a guaranteed contract was a deal breaker. frick him either way.

you're basically saying he wanted to longest possible guaranteed contract he could find.

if that's what Miles wants to do all he needs to do is switch QBs.

Huge assumption here... that LSU hadn't had interest from others AND that they indeed wanted to keep Chavis. I would say it is a good assumption LSU wants him to stay, but it is still an assumption.

The former was clearly the case last night. Miles was pissed that Chavis is leaving.

I'll repeat what vegas4LSU said last night. Alleva is not a friend of LSU football.

because it's impossible that Miles was pissed because Chavis told him at the last fricking minute and then the defense performed that abortion on the field?

if you think paying a 60 year old DC almost $2 million a season to potentially not coach for a program whose coach is already on the hot seat is fiscal responsibility i think you need your head examined.

If this is indeed true, why does he still have a job at LSU? And keeps getting raises?

Paying Chavis 1.3 million for two years after a potential Miles departure would be crazy.

The "Miles Clause" is a misnomer--it's the "Head Coach" clause in every assistant's contract.

Chavis was unreasonable expecting an exception.

I am a bit peeved, however, that we apparently did not try to match the 1.7 million.

I think we should have done that.

Wasn't Chief making like $350k a year when he first came to LSU? 6yrs ago.

Going with the $1.33MM a year offer, that's an average of $196k pay raise a year (after the first year, including this one).

We're talking a 56% pay raise to start (on avg) ending with a 17.2% raise.

Let's review Alleva hiring success since he has been here.

Both Baseball and Football head coaches were here before he arrived and are still here.

Basketball Trent Johnson, this is flat and simple he sucked, he had success with John Bradey's players.

Johny Jones, he has really be a spark to recruting, but his teams have underperformed. Verdict still out on him.

Women's basketball. They have fallen apart, Under Sue Gunter we were very good and than Chatman continued the success. Van came in had a good first season than we fell apart. Under Caldwell we haven't finished above top 4 in the SEC. A team who use to be at the same level as Tennessee is now falling apart.

I don't know enough about the smaller sports to comment.

But none of his head coaching hires have been great. Assistant coaching hires go to the head coaching.

I think Alleva holds a lot of blame for this loss.

To stay at the top, you have to stay in-line with the other top teams in the league. Allowing a West rival to leap frog you by outbidding you shows a lack of forward thinking.

Are they going to let them go after Frank Wilson next with the same type of strategy while we remain "fiscally" responsible after expanding the stadium to hold over $100K (and reaping the financial benefits from the extra seating capacity) and adding a Nutrition Center for the athletes?
