Another NFL player from Hahnville High and St. Charles Parish.
All the Best to AB and his family, he may need a little Luck to Stay employed in the NFL, but he will get a Shot.

As long as he doesn't fail a physical, he'll make around 450,000 this year. They'll need him to help back up injury prone Foster after letting go/trading/losing in FA (don't care enoigh to look up lol) Ben Tate.

If Magee and Hilliard can sign a deal next year and barring any cuts, every RB from the 2012 season will be on contract.

That money will give him and his family a good start in life. Who says he can't have a regular job after football.

I completely agree. All I said was that this contract isn't enough to retire on at age 30. Nothing more or less than that. It's a good head start and if he keeps his expenses down and gets even a lower middle-class job after football he'll be okay. Not rich, but okay.

Good for him -
A solid back and one of the best RBs I've seen at LSU at picking up the blitz.

On a side note, Blues contract shows again why guys are leaving early. Blue and Ego's contracts aren't that exponentially different comparatively speaking and they were picked 4 rds apart.

But Ego is going to get a nice juicy check of around 1.5 mill, while Blue gets 117k+. That is the difference. Kadeem Carey (selected in the 4th round), just got an over 440k check. It's really nothing but about a 700 thousand difference on the signing bonus and contract between the two though.

Another thing, some people won't read that chart right, but the cap hit for the bonus money is spread over 4 years, not the bonus money Blue actually gets. He got a 117k+ check after he signed the papers.

blue will end up with about 80k after taxes, agent, etc. factor in the cost of moving to houston and living a few months and this is not a lot of money. good for someone in REAL need but not a lot. if he makes team it all works out well for him. if he doesn't make team, then money will be substantially gone (due to family financial situation) by year end. good luck to blue.

everyone's forgetting about the agent's cut
you mentioned it, but I think the cut is higher, i.e., less net $

The NFL matches $2 to $1 for 401k's up to $24,000 each year. So that is a pretty huge advantage.

Teams then offer $2 to $1 as well after 1 year.

providing the employee enrolls in the program, there's also an annual limit of all tax-deferred pensionable earnings that can be made(doesn't preclude the individual from making after tax contributions though)

Is that guaranteed? So like...he's guaranteed a roster spot?

No what's guaranteed is his $117 thousand (and change) signing bonus. Nothing more until he earns a spot on the roster. Then it's year by year.

You do realize the average career of starting running backs is 2.5 years. From the quick research i just did that is STARTING running backs. Doesnt mention backups who never start

So where does it say the career length of STARTING running backs in any of your links?

Your 1st link

quote:

Three years. That is the average career of an NFL running back.

Also, it is bleacher report

-doesn't provide a source either

2nd link

-Still talking about all NFL running backs, not starters
3rd link

quote:

quote:

The career of the average back is less than 2.6 years.
]

-and that one is from WikiAnswers.

If anything, your links show that the average career of any NFL running back is greater than 2.5 years. Starters would be much, much higher

Just did the math myself.

The current average for starting running backs is 5.2 years even though they are all still playing right now.

So at retirement, it is going to be at least 6+ years.

Can you name some starting running backs that were out of the league in 3 years? The only ones today under 3 years are:

Morris - 2 years
Lacy - 1 year
Stacy - 1 year
Richardson - 2 years (starter?)

Blue has been named the starter????......that's awesome!

Average is about three years, most are out because they are cut, not hurt....obviously if u are a starter your career will be longer.

Where did I say that Blue was named the starter? I was responding to someone who was claiming the average career for someone who is a starter is 2.5 years. That is just false.

If he gets a roster spot he'll be fine. I just hope he doesn't fall into the pitfalls of so many others. Get 75k after agent and taxes and get a 65K car then dont make a roster.

Why would they? They get paid to play.

Shocking? Hard to believe professional athletes are bad with money?

It actually depends on their contract. Plenty of players get paid for workouts
