Frank Herron will be our best DL this year and Donte Jackson will be our best cover corner by the end of the year. Duke Riley will be fine. My biggest worry is Bower trying to cover someone more than 5 yards downfield.

This is a very insightful comment all around. I agree with every point except your first one, but I agree with the spirit of that. Herron looked extremely disruptive at the end of last year. But Godchaux is a year behind him, yet has beaten him out every year. I doubt that changes.

Your point about Bower is dead on, and it's not just him. I posted yesterday that our biggest concern on defense is that only one of our two deep OLBs can run. Key, Bower, and Washington are too slow for the position. I know some people think Key is the second coming of Mingo, but he's actually not that fast. Running backs easily got the corner on Key last year, and even QBs had no problem outrunning him.

that's as a 4-3 DT which is not the same thing as a 3-4 NT. You do know there's a difference don't you? What's your problem?

The NT in this def is asked to be a penetrator and that is what Godchaux does best. I'm not trying to be a dick but damn there is so much misinformation & baseless opinions in this thread

It is criminal that DeSean Smith can't unseat those two on the depth chart

Is it really? I mean how many seasons does one have to watch to realize that LSU doesn't see the TE as a part of its passing game.

To me that's what I see as the "criminal" part

Ah. I thought it was an indictment on Smith's abilities.

I completely agree that in a passing attack that routinely struggles to complete even 2 passes in a row, Miles and Co. can't figure out that the TE is an eligible receiver. Then again, that would require going to the intermediate middle of the field where only eagles dare (along with the rest of college football)

The weakness we have that no one seems to notice or care about is in our two-deep at outside linebacker there's only one guy who can run. I promise you that is a much bigger problem than Duke at inside

We have enough guys that can run. Aranda will use some hybrid guys and switch up the alignments if need be. I'd be shocked if we played a 3-4 base much of the time.

run plungers in the middle at the second level is where this team has few options. I respectfully disagree

Maybe so. He is probably the player that would be our best NT, but he creates serious matchup problems for the other team when on the edge. I prefer to see him abusing TE's over being at NT where he can easily be double teamed.

No he presents matchup problems playing in the middle of the defense. Fact. That's where all his production came last year. We don't even know if he can play on the edge

He's listed as 6'4" 293 lbs (on dandydons website). I'm sure he must be bigger than that now. I just question his ability to hold down the point of attack and take on blockers in the run game at the NT position. He doesn't appear to have a wide base or anything like that.

I have heard it said that the NT in an Aranda defense doesn't play like a usual NT, but what happens if the NT is shooting gaps against the run. Seems like he could be pushed right out the play leaving a big hole like that if he isn't taking on blockers and trying to clog up the middle. Maybe no problem if you have some big ILB's to step into the hole. I don't doubt Godcheauxs ability to make plays regardless, because he is a very talented player, just seems out of position at NT to me.

on a side note, when looking up Godcheaux's weight on DD's LSU roster, he has Quenton Thomas listed. He didn't get a 6th year did he? He redshirted as a true freshman then had an injury plagued career at LSU. Could he have applied for and been granted another year?
