LSU looks to stay unbeaten as the Mountaineers of Appalachian State come to town for a three game set this weekend. The games will not be televised, but can be seen on the Geauxzone at lsusports.net and heard on local 98.1.
Gametimes
Friday 7:00pm
Saturday 2:00pm
Sunday 11:00am

Appalachian State comes into Baton Rouge with a 2-1 record, as they lost their opener last weekend to George Mason 2-1, and the following day swept a twin bill with Akron 4-1 and 8-3. Early in the season it appears they will rely heavily on their pitching. They boast a 1.73 team ERA while the Tigers boast a 1.50 team ERA
Pitching matchups/probables for the weekend:
Friday
Kevin Gausman RHP (1-0, 1.50ERA, 6IP, 7K, 2BB) vs Seth Grant RHP (0-0, 0.00ERA, 6IP, 8K, 0BB)
Saturday
Ryan Eades RHP (1-0, 0.00ERA, 5IP, 8K, 1BB) vs Ryan Arrowood RHP (0-0, 4.50ERA, 4IP, 6K, 3BB)
Sunday
Kurt Mccune RHP (1-0, 0.00ERA, 6IP, 4K, 1BB) vs Rob Marcello LHP (1-0, 0.00ERA, 5IP, 5K, 0BB)

The Mountaineers come in hitting .250 as a team and look to be a very top-heavy lineup with limited power at the top of the order. While the Tigers also won't rely on power, they come in hitting .333 as a team after 4 games. Look for Appy State to use their speed to get in scoring position as they are 7-8 on the basepaths this season.

Appalachian State looks to bat like this:
1.Hector Crespo (.333, 4BB, 2/2SB)
2.Preston Troutman (.200)
3.Will Callaway (.400, 3/3SB)
4.Daniel Kassouf(.333, 1HR, 1-3B, 5RBI)
5.Tyler Tewell (.300, 2/2SB)
6.Jeremy Dowdy (.250)
7.Trey Holmes (.167)
8.Zack Briggs (.167)
9.Tyler Zupcic (.200, 1-3B)

LSU counters with:
1.Tyler Hanover (.231)
2.Casey Yocum (.250, 2-2B, 2RBI)
3.Raph Rhymes (.417, 3RBI)
4.Mason Katz (.417, 6RBI)
5.Jackson Slaid (.500, 3RBI)
6.Jacoby Jones (.231, 5RBI)
7.Austin Nola (.333, 6RBI)
8.Ty Ross (.571) or Tyler Moore (.250)
9.Grant Dozar (against RHP .333, 1 HR) or Jared Foster (against LHP .571 4RBI)

Our catchers seem to be at least a little better at throwing runners out. This team should be a good test.

If Yocom doesn't start hitting soon, we'll see Didier at second base, IMO.

Appy State looks like last year's LSU team (on a smaller scale)...relies on pitching and a top-heavy lineup.
Almost a mirror image

I agree, plus Didier brings some pop in the lineup. He almost hit another one out on Wednesday (though the wind was aiding everything hit to RF)

Wouldn't suck having another left handed bat in the lineup.

Hoping their Friday night starter looks as good as his stats...batters need to be challenged early in the season to see how they respond.

Thanks for the info. Either way, Moore looks to be very capable as a replacement

Ive only seen one guy run on Ross and he threw him out. I only saw one guy run on Moore and Moore two hopped the shortstop. If appalachain runs as much as it seems that could be a big difference.

I would assume ross worked on that during the offseason. It sucks that he has throwing shoulder issues this early in the season.

Hopefully moore improves.

Yea, supposedly he dropped about 15lbs and was tearing the cover off the ball in the fall. The one good thing about Ross possibly being injured is that we have three other catchers (Moore, Snickeris, and Dozar)

Weather looks good all weekend. The only chance for rain looks to be towards the end of tomorrows game. If attending, you may want to bring a light jacket also, as it appears to be kind of cold tonight and tomorrow evening
