I do not think even with Lee that we would have won. I think Bama had a chip on their shoulder and nothing to lose. We beat Bama the first time by minimizing mistakes, getting some very lucky plays (goal line Int, Bama missed FGs, etc).

Yeah if the voters would have done the right thing and put the Big 12 Conference Champions Oklahoma State in there instead of giving Bama a do over...

Then why didn't Mett beat them in 12 or 13?

we'll never know, will we?

Les didn't try everything he had to try to generate a spark. Just the same stuff, over and over. And we went straight down the drain.

That's what infuriates the fans so much. Not necessarily the fact that we lost (Bama was great and it's very hard to beat a good team twice) but that we didn't try anything and everything in the last game of the year for the crystal trophy.

That's what makes 1/9/12 so pathetic.

Pretty much sums up Les offenses since 2008.

Not a chance. Bama was the only team that would beat LSU that season. Consider:
Lee was always awful against Bama.
JJ was hapless on 1/9.
Mett couldn't have done much worse, but considering his offenses failed against Bama in 2012 and 2013 it's doubtful he does much better.

well then, I'm surprised we even played the game. Should've just handed Saban the trophy before the opening kickoff.

LSU had a punchers chance if Mettenberger took on day 1 of Bowl practice because there is no defense for the perfect pass.

JJ and Lee had no chance to beat Bama again.

Yes.

We barely beat them during the regular season.

I reject your framing of that game. LSU beat them fair and square in the game of the century on their home field. And not because the kicker "was cold." It was because LSU's defense was so great that Bama only got inside the LSU 30 for ONE PLAY. That's a sound beating any way you look at it. I no way, shape or form did LSU luckily win the game. It was a well-earned victory.

But was there any scenario in which LSU would have won that game?

The only counter-factual I'm interested in is one in which ANYONE OF THE QBs gets to the throw the ball. Instead, down by 2 scores, LSU ran like 12 out of 15 offensive plays in the 4th quarter.

After we beat them in the 9-6 game of the century, they played a scrub rent a win the next week (I think GSU) that ran a triple option offense and gained near 300yds rushing on them while hardly ever throwing the ball.

With the loss to LSU and getting gashed by GSU, Saban made adjustments. We didn't.

If Scott doesn't step out of bounds in OT and takes it to the house LSU wins 12-6 on a walk off touchdown and that game get framed in a totally different way.

If the game had been cancelled and rescheduled and Les would not have been available to coach the rescheduled game and JJ would have been suspended again, and the gumps all had the flu.

Another good point. Instead, everyone focuses on the "lucky" interception that Reid made. Scott stepping out of bounds was vastly more unlucky than the pick was lucky.

Sure, if we had a different coach.

Nah.

As tired as I am of Miles, you can't say that.

Miles had already beaten Saban once that year, on Saban's turf. Not many coaches in America could beat Saban twice in a season, with the requirement that once is at Bama and the second is on a neutral field. That's a tall task.

Now HOW Les coached game two can be criticized, but LSU lost the moment the rematch was announced.

There are about three or four plays that could have changed that game in a big way. One was the obviously bad INT that's a gif now. If He keeps it or if Ware magically realizes he was wanting to toss it out and doesn't go for the block, that's a big gain.

There was also a really nice pass play over the middle what was one of our only good offensive plays that night. However he had a WR with a step on the corner down the sideline that was a sure TD if he sees that one. That makes it a 14-7 ballgame. That's a whole different world.

Along with a few more plays it could have gone a lot different, but Bama was clearly the better team on the field that night, and the score showed.

We may have been the better team the first night, but our own shitty luck ended up making that not matter.

The little man was on ESPN every twenty minutes for 2-3 days politicking to get that one. He didn't have enough time to scream at any of his coaches or players.

He wiped his chin off and was awarded the game.
