Not really. Before, he was recruiting to someone else's track record. Now he's recruiting to his own.

Yeah we need a good ol Les class of 9 WRs, 9 DBs, 2 kickers and 2 punters.

To be fair, there was a black cloud of uncertainty that clouded the program when he was hired.. we are trending up now, so recruiting should pick up some (even though I don’t really believe it ‘fell off’ much, if any)

Exactly what I was about to say. Les wanted a bunch of flashy 5 stars but left the trenches bare. Orgeron immediately recognized the insanity of this philosophy and reloaded where it matters most, the meathogs and the linebackers!

This has been a surprise considering Orgeron's reputation.

Miles was a very good recruiter and that was his saving grace with me. I never expected better recruiting from Orgeron from a class ranking perspective. My hope was that there would be little to no drop off in recruiting under Orgeron.

Well, you are correct but only if you go by class ranking. While last year's class was fairly "meh" from a stars and ranking standpoint, we obviously filled ALOT of needs. Also, transfers like Fehoko and Burrow are not included in star rankings...those guys have been pivotal. And someone like Cole Tracy hurts a class ranking but we don't beat Auburn on the road without him. Les recruited kickers like Gamble and Culp.....

Les recruited well but we always seemed to have holes in the roster. Especially at critical positions like Left Tackle, DT, and especially QB.

Let's see how the next 2 classes pan out before we determine who has recruited better.

Not here to argue between O & Miles.

Just wanted to give Coach O credit for Damien Lewis. An extremely low ranked JUCO OL that ended up panning out better than Traore...at this point. I still think Traore has the higher NFL ceiling, but Lewis was a damn good find.

I don't defend O much, but recruiting at LSU depends in a large part on how good the in-state talent is for that particular year. Yes, LSU has always been able to get good players from Texas and Florida (as well as some from GA and other spots), but the foundation of past great classes have always been Louisiana players. Last year was somewhat of a "down" year, but O was still able to nab 3 of the top 4 LA players and 9 of the to 15. That was up significantly from the year before. This year he has 5 of the top 10 LA players committed with a chance to grab two more.

He was able to save (for the most part) a really good 2017 class. He struggled last year (relative to LSU's standards), though he also used two scholarships to get this season's starting QB and kicker...without either LSU likely would not be 5-0.

This recruiting class should kind of give us a better idea of O's recruiting prowess as LSU's HC. He's at 7 right now with a chance to add a few more top 150 players. Well see

Les's recruiting strategy was pretty much the same for the duration of his time here. He signed about 8 linemen (OL/DL) per year, and 8-9 WR/DB per year. Looking back on the classes there were just A LOT more misses on the O and D lines. He didn't ignore the trenches like most on here like to parrot. It just seems like we've been much better evaluating skill players than linemen in the past 10 or so years.

ETA: So just running the numbers from '06 to '15 he averaged signing 8.4 WR/DB and 8.4 OL/DL... lol

Les recruited well but we always seemed to have holes in the roster. Especially at critical positions like Left Tackle, DT, and especially QB.

Let's see how the next 2 classes pan out before we determine who has recruited better.
To me, the biggest difference between a 5* and 3* is a 5* has significant contribution at least 6 games in, a 3* not until at lease sophomore year, if not junior. Obviously, that's not the ONLY difference but I'd say it is the most frequent.

With that in mind you have to compare ranking to who is starting (which would be a significant contribution in anyone's book).

We have 4 transfers starting in their first [eligible] year: Burrow, Tracy, Lewis, Fehoka

We have 2 that we've needed often: Alexander, Traore

So at some point, that has to be weighed against the class ranking. I'm not saying it means we actually had a top-5 class. But when you have "first year" players, transfers, starting you have to toss some bonus points in there to be realistic.

And whomever posted about the cloud of uncertainty has a point also. It affected us. I don't know how much improvement we will get, but I expect some due to that clearing up some.

Yes, I'm completely avoiding the "filling holes" aspect. That's a whole thread of re-hash there.

ETA: and also, to date, as it stands now, Les was a better recruiter if you look at his entire tenure. The weight towards skill players didn't show up until later, so I'm "averaging that out".

I give O a pass on the recruiting class last year because everyone used the Coach O will be gone next year against LSU. Plus there were so many holes left by miles on the O and dline he filled them with some talent.
Im not saying it was top talent but it is getting there. If O can have a good year at LSU and show LSU is on the uptick then lookout. My only negative so far with this staff is it doesnt seem like LSU is getting top tier talent on the oline and dlines.Thomas is a good start but we need 3 or 4 guys like this. im talking R.lawerence types on the lines.Game changers. I mean lawerence, delphit, white , phillips were close to 5 stars. These are the types that get you into the playoff.

Miles got to build off Saban. O had to build off a depleted Miles roster and reputation. not apples to apples.

O’s Classes may not be as high in star rankings as Miles’s were but I trust O’s talent evaluation more than Miles. Go look at the teams Houston Nutt had when O left Ole Miss. They had some stout talent leftover from O that were not very highly rated guys coming out of high school.

no. he surely brought some highly rated talent in. but when one factors in that he let Chavis ruin our DL and LB's and failed at QB recruiting I like O better. BUT, O hasn't been here long enough to make a definitive judgement. I just know he has done well, on a team basis, of putting together a couple of good classes (plus transfers). with Fisher in the neighborhood things might get dicey.

. There were signings based on need and many of the linemen were 4*. What the hell are the optics you guys tend to spew are completely bullshite. It was defections that left. Cush was a Les guy for example. Oh wait so was Brumfield... so don’t give me that shite. Linemen generally take a while to develop into their bodies you dumb fricks.
