As you watched our defensive line get blown off the line of scrimmage in the AL, OM and AR games did you think our DL was big enough??

Almost EVERY defense eventually cracks if it's getting no offensive support. Our 2011 defense was one of the rare exceptions. They held it together in Tuscaloosa, which is why we won 9-6. They kept us in the Arkansas and Georgia games in spite of two quarters in each game of complete offensive ineptitude. They were talented, experienced and deep. Last year we were talented, not extremely experienced, and not deep. But as the OP pointed out, we were just as big as 2011.

It all depends if Moffit wants to get off his horse and get the max out of these guys. Frustrating to see Bama absolutely manhandle our guys in the trenches.

If our guys were 300 then Bama's guys were 325. I don't believe we have a 300lb dlinemen on the team. The dline was mauled in the 3 losses.

Not impressed with Moffit results lately. Seems like we got pushed around pretty good the last couple of years by the heart of our schedule in the West. Even Chavis' last season the defense was pushed around. The ranking and stats for that defense two seasons ago were mostly built off of beating up the lower level OOC teams like Sam Houston State on the schedule. Wisconsin offense was not good the first game we played that year either.

I think grades or just in the doghouse for a couple different reasons...could have been work ethic he looked @285-290 vs T.T.

If Bama skipped a couple of years recruiting big defensive linemen their strength coach would seem unimpressive as well.

True, and I blamed a lot of our losses in prior seasons to a weak offense that couldn't keep our defense off the field late in the game. OTOH, our DL was getting beat up early in the aforementioned games, long before our offensive ineptitude had taken effect.

The other "big" question is the size of our DL in comparison the size of the other team's OL. I don't have the rosters in front of me for AL, AR and OM, but I have the general impression AR and OM OL's have been getting "bigger" since '11; it feels like AL is always big (and strong). If we stayed the same size and other teams got bigger, it's the same effect as our DL getting smaller. Another thing is that none of us here can measure the ball player's strength. Even if the sizes we see are similar, the strength may have declined. This could happen for a number of reasons (genetic make up of the player, nutrition, work ethic of a player, etc), despite having a good weight/fitness program and staff.

I have been wondering the same here but I came to the conclusion you can only hang so much meat on a frame. I think we have gotten most of that out of the guys we have developed but recently we have been playing guys as frosh and sophs who are still not physically maxed out.

I saw an article a couple of yrs back that when we played Oregon we shaved 10-15 lbs off our d-line for speed and mostly endurance and for that group it worked out well. The guys who came behind that 2011-12 group have not fared as well with it.

I see us now going back to a bigger DL with Orgeron coaching that group. As for 260 lb DE's please remember that Tyson Jackson played DE at 300 lbs. I would be happy with some Damarcus Ware types if they play like him... 6'4" 260 lbs.

Here's what I think was the issue with the strength & conditioning last year: depth. Last year, the DL didn't have a lot of proven guys behind the starters. So, with the understanding that the DL would rotate fewer players for fewer downs, the starters simply needed to have the conditioning to play the max amount. Bama's DL had a lot more guys to rotate, so they could focus on strength rather than reps. With Herron's and Gilmore's progress, along with Lawrence and the other D-linemen coming in this year, Moffit may be able to focus more on brute strength. I expect to see a much more imposing DL in 2016.

It will be interesting to see how us getting bigger impacts out ability to stop the spread.

with a bigger D we will probably see more spread. How can we realistically go about increasing the size of our D?

can coach Moffit really increase the size of our D? and how is the horse involved? Not really comfortable with this.
