Even Chavis' last season the defense was pushed around
At the beginning of the year yes, but not after a few new guys came into their own. Minus the bullshite bowl where Chavis didn't give a care, LSU was on fire on defense the second half of the year.
You forget that our two starting DTs were first year starters. Godchaux had just came off an injury in high school and was a true freshman. Also that Welter was playing MLB.

The ranking and stats for that defense two seasons ago were mostly built off of beating up the lower level OOC teams like Sam Houston State on the schedule
Rushing total vs LSU compared to rest of schedule
Florida - 3rd lowest
Kentucky - lowest
Ole Miss - 5th lowest
Alabama - 2nd lowest
Arkansas - 2nd lowest
TAMU - 3rd lowest
Rushing average vs LSU compared to rest of schedule
Florida - 5th lowest
Kentucky - 2nd lowest
Ole Miss - 7th lowest (only one that was middle of the pack)
Alabama - 2nd lowest
Arkansas - 2nd lowest
TAMU - 5th lowest
We went from teams having a field day vs us, to teams recording their 5th lowest or worse rushing totals and averages against us.

Wisconsin offense was not good the first game we played that year either.
Actually Wisconsin's total offense has been in the top 25 for 3 of the last 5 years including two top 20 finishes, and their scoring offense has been in the top 30 including once at 6th.
Wisconsin's offense is pretty much been running the ball, but they usually do it at such a high and efficent level. And yes their passing game is awful.
Melvin Gordon did whatever the hell he wanted against us and everybody else minus Ohio State and yes Western Illinois in 2014. I still believe he got hurt vs LSU and played hurt the following game against that FCS school.
