“I had committed to LSU at the beginning of my sophomore season, but after Garin (a LSU signee who signed with the Boston Red Sox after being chosen in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB draft) signed, they stopped sending me letters and inviting me to games, so I decommitted."

The Gatorade Player of the Year program began in 1985 and recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Cecchini is the third Barbe winner of the baseball award, joining Carmen Angelini (2007) and Joe Lawrence (1996). Cecchini batted .548 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in leading the Bucs (24-9) to the Class 5A quarterfinals. He was a first team selection for the Class 5A all state and American Press All Southwest Louisiana teams.
“It is a heck of an award to get and something I never expected to get as a junior,” said Cecchini.
“It is really special and a big accomplishment to be just the third winner for Barbe with all of the great players that have come through the program, players like Carmen and Joe Lawrence, Austin Nagle and my brother Garin.”

Gavin has helped the Bucs to three consecutive trips to the state tournament. The Bucs reached the semifinals in 2009 and 2010 before losing 2-1 to eventual state champion Jesuit in the quarterfinals this season. “My main goal next year is to win a state championship, and hopefully make Team USA,” he said.

Cecchini will be leaving for Team USA tryouts next week at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. If he is chosen for the 18-and-under team, he will play in the Pan American games in Cartagena, Colombia in September.

Cecchini has switched his college commitment from LSU to Ole Miss.
“I had committed to LSU at the beginning of my sophomore season, but after Garin (a LSU signee who signed with the Boston Red Sox after being chosen in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB draft) signed, they stopped sending me letters and inviting me to games, so I decommitted. Ole Miss is a great place and (head coach Mike) Bianco is great. They have great fans and Coach (Carl) Lafferty is doing a great job of recruiting coordinator. We might have the number one class in the country. (Former Barbe outfielder) Tanner Mathis is there and he loves it.”

Cecchini has volunteered locally on behalf of an area homeless shelter, as an elementary school motivational guest speaker and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program began in 1985 and recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Sorry, no link. It's an American Press article in today's paper.

Uhh...Joe Lawrence played pro-baseball for 8 years and played multiple games in the big leagues. He also owns a portion of Marucci bats. If he turns out like that I'd say he's doing pretty well. If Mainieri stops recruiting Barbe (which is one of the top 2 or 3 programs in the state for the last 15 years) over the older brother signing with the Red Sox then it's another nail in his coffin.

Alls I've been able to find is he played one season for the Blue Jays in 2002.

I'm not saying he has a terrible career or anything like that. All I meant was I hope Cecchini has a better pro career than they did. Although, I guess it's dumb to count out Angelini.. seems like he's been in the Yankees organization forever, but he's still only 22. Hope it works out for them and they can enjoy success in the MLB.

It doesn't matter what his dad, brother, mother, or coach did! If he was interested in LSU and Man. stopped recruiting him becasue he was butthurt, it was just plain ignorant.

and yeah, you can all start with teh "he's going pro" bullshite or "Ole Miss will lose in the regionals" crap

With the way LSU baseball performed and the state of the program, we were absolutely completely ignorant to stop going after someone right down the road that was obviously talented.

Hate to break it to ya kids, LSU is in NO position to act like a pussy because someone's brother took well over 1.5 Million

He took under 1.5MM after telling PM he wouldnt sign for less than 1.5MM. I think that is the problem PM has with them, from what Ive gathered around here.

Yeah, I think it was 1.3 or something around there......but still.....we got a lot of players that leave early for a LOT less than that...I sure hope we wouldn't stop recruiting Gatorade Players of the Year from their schools...

It's just an ignorant move on M's part....He REALLY showed them.....

All he did was hurt LSU and got us more bad press.

Barbe players are pushed to MLB
They use LSU and Rice (Angellini) as leverage
Only one that went to college went to Tulane (Nick Bourgeois)

Lawrence, Nagle, Angellini, Cechinni (both), the list goes on and on - none have really panned out either even though Lawrence made it for a cup of coffee

Do you know how many Barbe players have been drafted and gone to college over the past 15 years?

Also, how do you conclude that Angelini and both Cecchinis have not panned out?

Also, it's nice to omit Wade Leblanc from your argument. He is the starting pitcher tonight for the San Diego Padres.

Understood. What I think about the freshman at Barbe (who were All-District, Bryce Jordan honorable mention All-State) is that they won't be first round draft picks, but very good college players who COULD make it to our campus if PM gives them a chance.

Quinn is a football prospect too, not sure what will happen there.

If PM is not interested, then we will lose them to Arkansas and Ole Miss, as I hear they are interested.

I would really like to see us move on from the Cecchini stuff and get back to business. It's over. Whatever happened to past Barbe players has little bearing on the future Barbe players. If they are college material, then we need to be on them!

PM has been around college baseball enough to know the game these MLB teams play. He needs to quit whining and taking it so personal. It will cost him if not.

p.m. and lsu will be just fine. lsu was a pretty good team the last third of the season. a blown save away from sweeping ms st on their home field. the same team that made it to a super regional and had florida on the ropes.

lsu was young this year. i believe they will be much better next. even to the point they will finish in the top 3 of the s.e.c.

p.m. got burned on some of his recruiting the past couple of seasons. he's learned and if you watched the draft this year, he will not lose nearly as many high round picks this year.

we have one of the better baseball coaches and the program is on solid footing. just be patient, good times are coming again. heck, if they would have been selected this year, i think they would have made some noise in a regional.

i like that his teams get better/peak towards the end of the year. sure up some of the recruiting and we are back on track.
