Pros and cons of vinyl soffit vs wood? I have been considering making the jump to replacing my wood soffit with vinyl. Supposedly low upkeep and superior ventilation. Are there drawbacks other than upfront costs vs wood?

I was under the impression hardie soffits were significantly more than vinyl soffits

I had hardie put in, depends on how long you plan to be there I guess but with the cost of lumber being what it is no way I want to deal with wood rot.

Siding, sure. Soffits, I never think twice about. I’ve never once looked at a soffit and thought “man that’s a cheap house”. My only thoughts are when I see wood with poor ventilation is “that’s gonna be a problem”

Yes, I have vinyl soffits and aluminum fascia on my McMansion.

I have vinyl soffit. Other than cleaning it is maintenance free. I have wood doors that are a pain in the arse. If you can avoid painted surfaces do it.

So far it sounds like style is the only advantage for wood?

I just moved into this brick home over the summer and the paint on the soffit and fascia is in rough shape along with some of the fascia boards having rot that needs replacement. For a little more money I can have it replaced with vinyl soffit and aluminum fascia. I was told the ventilation is much better and that the vinyl and aluminum will last a lifetime essentially just needing to be periodically cleaned.

I don't think I have enough visible soffit to warrant style over efficiency/pragmatism. I am a little concerned with how aluminum fascia boards will look but I suppose I see them all the time and just don't notice.

Maintenance free and last a lifetime is total bullshite.

It becomes brittle after say 6-8 years and goes to shite, and ya still have to wash it every year.

A weedeater will tear the shite out of some vinyl siding.

On soffit there is no good way to "seal" the edges so roaches and shite always have an open path to your attic.

Nada ever, its on cheap houses because its........ cheap

I've never heard of anyone tearing up their soffits with a weed whip before, but that's just me.

Can you even get aluminum soffit/fascia anymore? I was going to replace some that was damaged in zeta but I can’t find it anywhere.

If they are they’re doing it wrong! ??

I’ve had vinyl soffit and facia on my house for 22 yrs and it still looks great. I clean it now and then but that’s it. Don’t have to paint it, or re-caulk it.

I want to replace my vinyl with hardy board. I can’t get rid of wasps with vinyl.

I have vinyl soffit and metal facia. It’s easy and maintenance free. The rest of my house is hardy. The material cost is less and the labor is less because you don’t have to pay someone to paint it. The metal facia is easy to find at a building supply store. I got mine at ABC Supply but Lowe’s has it also. It’s not hard to install yourself but you have to rent the brake to bend it. It comes in a big roll of 24 inches and you cut it and bend it with a brake you can rent. Hardy is definitely higher quality than wood or vinyl but you have to caulk and paint it every 10 years or so. If you can afford it it’s definitely worth it. They also make hardy that is vented already so it can vent just as well as vinyl. Just something to look at is the drip edge on your roof. If it is set to a certain overhang ie 1x8 wood board you are probably better off doing hardy rather than metal for your facia.
