Tell me the pain of French Drains

Just moved to Old Metairie. The ground is pretty soppy over there after a rain. What are ballpark costs on running a french drain from the backyard to somewhere up front? 50 x 120 lot.
I have lots of other questions about tying them in to rain water sewers, etc.. but that sounds kind of illegal, so I'll leave those be for now.

Very expensive. I assume because they're imported.

If you are feeling up for it, alligator in metairie is super helpful. Make sure to see if the owner is there. He can help you out with what you’ll need once you get a little research done.
It’s pretty pricey to get a landscaping company to do, but if you can probably knock it out in a few weekends.

The worst of it is digging trench. Other than that it's simple.

Yeah, I'm not so handy. Guess I'll start getting some quotes.

And a shovel or two.

Only use perforated hard pipe, not the black flex pipe.

Yep. Had a buddy of mine put one in at our house a few years ago. He was trying to get into landscaping on his own after working for other companies. Figured I would help him out as I needed some work done. He hired a couple of people to dig, had a load of gravel dropped off, and they knocked it out over a weekend. They dug out the trench, maybe a couple feet deep, laid a bed of gravel, put in the wrapped pipe and an exit, then covered it all back up. Could have done it myself and saved a couple thousand, but it was well worth it. About a 50 foot run, and it exits right at my driveway. We live in an older house with a full basement and were having some leaks with really heavy rains. He also brought in a load of dirt and graded it away from the foundation so that we wouldn't have standing water at the house. Between the french drain and dirt work, I've been pleased with no more leaky basement.

I have used many of these. Post hole digger and go as deep as you can. Fill with rocks. Or lay a trench along flower bed. Fill with rocks. I’ve even pounded pipe under sidewalks to drain flowerbeds into lawn. Replace with pVc into French drain. Pretty easy if you are even semi self sufficient and handy.

You need to consider the grade of your property from front to back and side to side. Are you trying to move the water uphill to get to a drainage ditch or the street? Completely flat grade is just as bad. You need fall to direct the water to where you want it or you are going to need a sump basin and pump to move water through hard pipe.

Black accordion yard drains get soft when buried, and any drain cleaner that can remove roots will dig into the ridges and cut through the soft black plastic wall.

Back in the day you could do this. JP is very prohibitive of this now. You could do it, but very likely that someone in the OMHOA will rat you out. The. You pay fines. Most contractors won’t even do it.
Call Greenman Dan. His specialty is doing French drains.

Go to the rental place and rent a mini excavator or a trencher for a day. Why would anyone dig by hand when there are back saving machines? Well worth the money.
