So I am shopping for a new refrigerator and have my eye on a Samsung model. It has a couple really nice features I can't find from any other brand.

Of course, I'm well aware of their reputation that their reliability is dogshit and that anyone who has ever owned one will tell you to run away as fast as you can from a Samsung and buy ANYTHING before considering a Samsung.

So that got me wondering how in the hell their appliances segment even stays in business, why retailers and dealers continue to push and sell them, and why a the online reviews for their models are seemingly all 4+ star reviews.

So I did some research:

JD Power's 2021 Appliance Satisfaction Survey has Samsung winning 9 of 11 segments. Consumers even emphasize performance and reliability as their main concerns.

A major local appliance retailer in the Boston area addresses Samsung reliability and explains it's simply the volume of units Samsung sells rather than the percentage of faulty units.

LINK to Boston retailer's article.

YouTube video of retailer breaking down Samsung's reliability.

So which is it? Is their reputation misguided? Are all these anecdotal horror stories you hear simply rumor and hearsay? Are the reliability issues a thing of the past and Samsung has corrected and/or a function of the volume of the units they sell?

My brain is telling me to believe JD Power and the retailer and all their data, but my heart is telling me to listen to listen to the personal, first hand experiences of so many Samsung customers.

No idea. But as with everything, you only hear people’s opinions when something goes wrong. Nobody goes around bragging about how well their refrigerator works.

The big problem is finding a reputable refrigeration repair company that will actually work on them. When our LG ( basically the same as Samsung appliances) fridge’s compressor went out, LG was only trying to send electronic repairmen and all had horrible google reviews. One was even accused of theft by multiple reviews. I told them they could kick rocks and would take care of it myself.

When I called local moderate to highly rated repair companies, I was told they don’t work on Samsung or LG. One guy even laughed before telling me he wouldn’t work on it after telling him I had an LG.

Samsung and LG offer great features for a good cost but for me, it wasn’t worth it any more. Ended getting rid of my 2 year old LG fridge for a whirlpool.

All I can say is we've owned a Samsung washer/dryer and refrigerator. Fridge has had two issues, the water filter compartment broke and won't allow a new filter to go in and the ice maker has to be defrosted every few months. The washer springs broke 3 times within 2 years and I've replaced the dryer elements about 4 times in probably 6 years.
I will never buy anything Samsung except televisions from now on. Hate that f*cking fridge.

Same here.

We have all Samsung and the only issue I have is that fricking ice maker. It’s been repaired under warranty twice and it’s broken again.

I’m going buy a new fridge.

Just say no the Samsung. TV’s good. Appliances bad.

Samsung seems to push advertising and promotions better than anyone and continually rope people in.

I own a fridge that like everyone else sucks at making ice and can't be repaired. And a washer and dryer that is costant state of repair.

Their appliances have good features, but don't expect them to last as long as simple appliances from whirlpool. I expect to get a decade and doubt many get that far with a Samsung

I had a Samsung refrigerator. The one with the ice-dispenser in the door. Worked great for a year. Then, started freezing over, so I'd have to defrost it every couple months.

The previous GE refrigerator worked flawlessly for a decade before I had to replace it due to a flood.

IMO, don't buy a french door refrigerator with the ice-maker in the refrigerator compartment. They almost always seem to be a problem, and even in "reliable" brands are the first thing to go.

I'd just buy a traditional refrigerator/freezer with the ice maker in the freezer compartment and scoop your ice that way, or buy a separate ice-maker that will likely go out eventually anyway also.

. THIS

We had a Samsung fridge bc our old fridge crapped out after the flood of 2016. Fridge lasted a few years then started having the same issue. We had a side by side.

Sold it over the summer for what I could get for it and we went back to GE/Kenmore/whirlpool line.

Just reread everyone is saying their ice maker would freeze over. Our freezer side coils would freeze over. Got pissed taking everything out every few months to thaw the whole freezer. Samsung knows about their shitty defrost system and did nothing to fix it.

Do NOT buy a Samsung appliance.

You WILL be sorry.

Nobody will work on them, nobody can get parts for them, and they will break.

They sell a lot of units due to slick advertisements and people who walk into the store with no advance knowledge of what is reliable.

When I bought my fridge, I signed up for one month of consumer reports and read everything they had on fridges. Only the GE had good reports on ice makers. I bought the GE. I have to say, best ice maker ever. Makes a ton of ice fast.

Exactly this. When I finally break down and get a new fridge, I'm going to take this one out back and go Office Space on the ice maker.

After the flood in 2016 the wife wanted all matching black stainless appliances. I could only find all of them them in Samsung. French door fridge/freezer in bottom with in-door ice maker, double oven, gas stove top, dishwasher and overhead microwave.

I had to defrost the ice maker once, about 6 months ago.

Everything else has been working as they should.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

Like everyone else I had issues with my Samsung French Door fridge with the ice maker in the fridge compartment. It need ed to be defrosted with a blowdryer about once a week or it wouldn't produce ice. Sucks that it didn't work properly because all of the other things we liked about the unit. Would not recommend purchasing a Samsung fridge based on that experience.

Appreciate the feedback from everyone. What I'm hearing is pretty much what I expected, but I'll add this to the equation/discussion: model I'm looking at is a French door with ice maker in the freezer; no exterior dispensors of any kind.

Does this change things? The majority of issues I've read are with the ice maker, particularly the ice makers that are located in the fridge portion rather than the freezer. Does this change anything?

Probably. Seems that some of the "fixes" for the fridge mounted ice makers were adding insulation in some areas of the ice maker or keeping fridge temp air from getting into the ice maker. If the ice maker is always in freezing temps that should solve any of those problems.

I never researched reviews on any with the ice maker in the freezer.

My wife insisted on one, so I bought a sonic ice maker as well.

Don’t buy a Viking, also a huge piece of shite. You get the same story from repair guys, basically laughing at you…

There are a few things to consider when looking at refrigerator reviews. customer satisfaction and product reliability do not always go hand in hand on newer models (or even older ones TBH). If you happen to be one of the ones that needs a repair, brand reliability doesn not mean serviceability. I had an LG we really liked, when it broke down, after the warranty period by a bit, local repairman that I use does not do LG repairs.

LG rates high in customer satisfaction and predicted reliability. That is meaningless if you can't get anyone to repair it.

Below are the customer satisfaction and reliability data from consumer reports surveys for refrigerators.
