The fountain like the one shown…the whole area in the pool around where it splashes down is much cooler. I guess shooting fairly high into the air really makes a big difference for the cooling effect.

So if you have a waterfall already you don’t need these fountains….

You need the finest spray you can get. My deck jets probably do nada. And if you run em when it is above 92 you are probably warming your water faster than not doing anything. 91-92 is my borderline too warm number 93-94 is just pointless to get in it.

I just turned on my waterfall. My pool is 94 degrees. I’ll report back in a couple hours.

Does your pump run at all during the day?

Not sure. I just told him to order one that will cool this piss feeling pool off.

That's a nifty product from Amazon, and certainly easier than a trip to the hardware store, but

I would argue that you need to get as much water up in the air as possible and you can fabricate your own for the same money and get at least twice the spray.

I found running it as long as possible every day gave the largest temp drop. Some refinery engineer told me that it was more productive in the hot day time. No idea if that part is true, but he's a pretty smart guy.

I also had a waterfall, but it didn't yield near the same results as the spray device.

Yeah, mine is 87 this morning. I am about to give up the fight and just pray for a cloudy day

That's accurate. It's basically evaporative cooling on a small scale. It's more efficient when there's more water velocity, surface area and less humidity. The hottest part of the day has the least humidity. I'd run it 24/7 if I were you.

Anyone ever used one of those parachute type covers? It would also help keeping my neighbors crepe myrtle crap out of my pool. Something like this.

I just ordered one myself. I’ll report back after I get it installed

I just ordered one Sunday and installed it yesterday evening. It's a bitch to get it pulled tight since the material has some stretch. I nearly pulled my arse over into the pool atop the ladder a few times. It came out nice and shades at least a third of the pool. Time will tell if it helps. Can't hurt.

Mine have been through some decent wind storms without problems. Only thing I’ve taken them down for is hurricane.

It's anchored in to studs on all 3 points with 4x3" screws and uses 1/4" stainless cable. I'd guess the stitching at the eyelets will give-way first. I also have them all with turnbuckles and carbiners so I can pop it down with a little effort come hurricanes.

But yes, it is a point of some concern.

I am not saying running a fountain from the return does not work because I don't know for sure, but the logic behind this does not work.

Water is cooler on the bottom of the pool and heats up on the top. If you are running the return jets into a fountain you are recirculating the same warm water and its not airborne long enough to cool that much for the surface area you need to cool.

The better way to cool the pool is to cool the top of the water by spraying it with fresh cooler water. Either do this by hand with a misting nozzel or set up a misting system that comes on as the sun starts to fall. If you cool the top of the pool it will help reduce that top layer from mixing with the cooler water at the bottom and keeps the bottom cooler.

The sprayer works because it creates more water surface area (air-water interface) at which water molecules can evaporate.

That process steals heat from the remaining water, making it colder. Lick your arm and blow on it. Despite the warmer air out of your mouth, there is an overall cooling effect.

Additionally, the droplets flying through the air are constantly exposed to new less humid air at the interface.

The most efficient system will have a longer spray and smaller drops, the former maximizing time, and both resulting in greater surface area

ETA it also blows off carbon dioxide and can affect your pH. You'll need to add more acid than usual

I ordered one of the amazon sprinklers/fountains and installed it last night. Ran it all night, and the pool was way cooler than normal at mid day today. I'm going to add another one now that I know they work. Not going to run my pump all night, but I might set it to start up earlier before sunrise in the morning.

For those of you having trouble hooking your sprinkler up to your return jet, here's what I had to do. I unscrewed the female eyeball holder and eyeball. After that, there is a male threaded piece sticking out. What I didn't know until I took a trip to the pool store, is that this piece is a double sided male nipple. Unscrew this nipple and remove it. It might be tight, they make a little key for removing them that cost me $5. What you are left with is a 1.5" female fitting, that you can screw your fountain into.
