Been in our home with pool for a handful of years now and it’s pretty much been low maintenance as far as the water quality goes, but this year it’s like a constant battle with algae outbreaks. I’m presently going through the TFP protocols but not cleared completely yet.

Anyone else in the SELA area having significantly more problems? I wonder if it’s from the extreme rain volume this Spring washing away CYA/stabilizer. I know mine had gotten very low.

A couple of years ago the guy that cleans my pool every other week told me to use No Mor Problems by United Chemicals. I get it on Amazon. Have never had an algae problem since. Amazon

Yes. I found the algae source, my plastic ladder. I removed and added large holes, cleaned and replaced. However I’m on day 5 of a SLAM and it is still eating my chlorine...not giving up on TFP and am heading down now to vacuum...but I am getting annoyed by the testing and such...

So far I (in the last week or so):
Finally got the cool pricey test kit.
Confirmed very low CYA problem.
Added CYA then bleach.
Brush brush brush and run Dolphin.
Killed off everything.
A handful of days later and it’s back.
FC level is down again to about .5. Guess I need to keep adding bleach consistently.
And it’s also the tough blue/black kind as well that you have to scrub hard with a wire brush to remove.

This is the first time I want to fill it with gasoline and light it.

I know phosphate remover is like lipstick on a pig but I’m so tired of seeing the algae I’m about to do that as another measure while continuing to monitor the FC.

What are your levels? What kind of pool? How do you chlorinate? Just by hand dumping bleach in? I just finished vacuuming now to go brush.

No issues on my end. I did have to add some stabilizer recently, but that's not unusual.

One thing that TFP / SLAM / etc doesn't really talk about and I learned the hard way... I have to add algaecide biweekly. No matter how perfect I have levels, algaecide is the secret ingredient. Its not used to get rid of algae but to prevent.

Shouldn’t be needed if your chlorine is good and stable.

This has been my best year yet. TFP is great.

No problems at all this year. Following TFP. Get the stabilizer, TA, and pH right and then wait until the sun goes down and shock the hell out of the pool with bleach. I'm talking 8-9 bottles. It will not be safe to swim in. Run the pump all night. Try to keep those levels high for a couple of days just to be safe.

Not a pool owner, but does all of the rain play a part in algae and chemical imbalance?

That’s not following TFP...

I've had problems with phosphates being to high. I put the phosfree in pool skimmer. Then the next day the damn filters are clogged up. Have to clean the 4 of them. Then if I shock the pool, water turns cloudy and filters are clogged up again. Never ending cycle. Phosfree sucks.

I wish I had that problem. With all this rain they are so far behind on my pool that I may not get it done this year.

I’m just dumping a bottle of bleach in like every other day unless the kids are definitely going to swim I’ll add some in between to keep the level right for them. Been clear as a bell.

How old is/was your original plaster? What is the estimated fee for this as i'm likely in the market for it as well.

If you are managing algae, then you have a never ending battle. You have to ELIMINATE the algae. Phosphates are algae food. Eliminate the algae, then it doesn't matter your phosphate level. The important part of a SLAM is the M...MANTAIN. You cannot dump a load of chlorine in and expect it to take care of the alage. The 3 criteria for when a SLAM is complete

You are done when:
CC is 0.5 or lower;
You pass an OCLT (ie overnight FC loss test shows a loss of 1.0 ppm or less);
And the water is clear.
When all three are true, you are done SLAMing and can allow the FC to drift down to normal levels.

Rain does NOT cause algae...you had it the entire time and never COMPLETELY got rid of it.
