I need lots of advice guys. My activity level is about to be non existent because I ruptured my patella tendon yesterday. Surgery, 6 weeks off, pain and suffering etc.

Obviously no lifting or running, but what about nutrition? I'm 28yo, 250 lbs and I lift and run a lot. I generally stick to high fat high protein nutrition.

With all that info, what do I need to alter? I'm in unchartered waters here and any advice is much appreciated.

Why can't you lift your upper body? I have a bud that ruptured his entire foot and went to the gym on crutches. I'm sure you're less mobile since you can't bend your knee but you could still do a few things.

You will probably see some muscle loss but just know it happens.

Legless rope climbs

Sit-ups with legs straight

Legless air bike

Seated on floor over head press with legs straight

Supine row.

That's off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more

I'm just getting back from a severely sprained ankle and I pretty much kept the diet the same. I cut out the protein bars, but still had a strawberry banana protein shake every day. I only gained 2 lbs and didn't lose a lot of muscle. I'm 42, so I would think that at 28, you're going to be fine.

Guy i workout with blew his achilees out a couple weeks ago. After surgery they put him in a cast and he has been in the gym lifting every day. Even some legs extensions.

I'm in the same boat but didn't tear my patella. Use this time to focus on other aspects of your life and eat stuff you want to eat for flavor. You won't regret missing a workout on your death bed.

I hope I'm not the first one to tell you this but if you ruptured your patella tendon and had it surgically repaired it's MUCH longer than 6 wks. I'm a PT and see these all the time.

Well crap. The surgeon I talked to said at least 6 weeks. Either way I'm setting up for the long haul.

Some gyms have those bikes where you pedal with your arms.

Since your activity is going to tank, I'd really track your calories so you don't balloon from trying to eat the same amount with far less activity.
