Like LSU777 said there's no really good way to translate it.

Also by not using stabilizer muscles you run the risk of injuring yourself due to strength imbalances

Also, the assistance between different smith machine mfg's varies substantially. I'm vacation in FL this week and this morning had to use a Smith machine (i know i know) It was so ridiculously counterbalanced that the bar almost lifted itself while I was getting a "feel" set in

You'll probably catch some shite for this thread.

lsu777 is right and that's about the best answer you'll get.

I think a smith machine bar is either 15 lbs or 5 lbs. a barbell is 45 lbs. do the math.

It's really not that simple. The Smith does all the work for your stabilizer muscles and you really won't gain much strength at all on it. Use it for awhile and grab some free weights and you won't believe how heavy it feels.

Not all Smiths are the same. The one at my gym is basically weightless.

Lack of strengthening muscles and creates bad body movements. Use a bar or broom stick if your not strong enough.

For real, I like the Smith for a few exercises like shrugs, calf raises, and close grip bench.

I personally think the smith machine is a great machine but it's a machine, it's not the same as barbells and dumbbells and unless you are really advanced and doing something like D.C. Training then it should not make up the bulk of your routine but if it's all you got, it's all you got.

Just get strong as frick on it and eventually when you can move to barbell movements.

Good video on using a smith machine

Smith Machine Tutorial

I would not use it though. Just deload and start back up on regular bench.

Like for example if you were to bench 225 on a smith machine what would that translate to on a regular bench?

The machine at my gym says resistance is 25 pounds. But, like others have said the free weights don't translate well with the smith machine

I once asked an older gentleman to spot me at the gym. He reluctantly let me waste 30 seconds of his time between sets, and then lectured me on needing to use a smith machine if the weight was too much for me to handle.

If you bench 225 on a smith machine, it takes around 225 pounds off of a regular bench.

The only thing I would consider using one for is bent over rows or shrugs, but I have barbells and DBs for that, so I don't use it at all.

I Worked out at a gym for a year that didn't have a free weight bench and only had Smith machine. I recently switched to a gym with real benches and it's taken me about 2 weeks to get used to it. I also can't lift quite as much yet.
