I grew up at Red’s in the 80s/90s. I can still remember playing solo racquetball while my mom worked out (before basketball courts).
I’ve been going about 2x/year since 2000 when visiting family.
Cold Plunge with TV, indoor tennis courts, food/bar, and overall size of facility are distinguishing attributes.

But now, im gonna be honest, crunch fitness has it figured out.
They opened up a new one here and it's way too crowded. Otherwise it would be a great gym.

Amazing facility. I know he doesn’t want to expand but he definitely should.
They are in the process of adding on to the facility right now with a 2 story women only section. The current women's gym area will be repurposed to expand the powerlifting area

I agree. I travel a lot for work driving through most of South LA from Lake Chuck to NOLA and the 2 things I do on my travels is find a gym and find a BJJ school. I think I have been to just about every place of each in the last 20 years. Honestly, I love Red's although if you aren't wearing ear buds downstairs you are probably gonna go deaf either from the db's getting dropped or the grunting. Yes, some of the equipment is kinda dated and there are some odd individuals in the locker room sometimes but just by shear size of the place and what it offers, it is probably the best in LA. Scenery isn't bad either.

Some of the old Nautilus and Body Masters stuff downstairs is by design and nostalgia. They add and swap out equipment on a semi regular basis but hang on to some older stuff at the expense of newer equipment that gets swapped out. For example, they added a decent amount of Arsenal stuff about a year or so ago and took out some things that I would preferred them keeping.
The main downstairs gym does feel somewhat cramped though from them trying to fit in as many things as they can.
Hopefully once the new women's gym is built they can spread out some things in the main downstairs gym more

It’s definitely the best in Louisiana. I have a hard time seeing anything superior. The entire south? That’s tough. Hard to imagine Texas Florida and Georgia don’t have anything better than reds. Feel good in saying it’s the best in Louisiana. If anyone has a legit competitor, feel free to share.
Is it better than the place in Mandeville? Stone Creek?

It’s showing its age and the bathrooms smell horrendous. Stone Creek is higher end but not nearly as expansive.

It’s crazy how many people are at red’s at all hours. It does have a huge amount of mirror staring douchebags and the men’s locker room/sauna area is disgusting. Old naked men everywhere. They have signs up that you can’t use your cellphone because guys take pictures in there. WTF?

Spoken from a member of the non binary generation. Got snapped in the gym shower by a towel!

They clean the shite out of the bathrooms every night after close but with that many people using them and the age it definitely has a smell
I’m hoping when they complete the new women’s area that they gut and redo the men’s locker room area. The current women’s locker room is being replaced and should allow an expansion of the men’s area

Wtf. That’s half the reason I go to the gym and the only reason I do Yoga on Saturdays

It’s filled with kids who think they’re Chris Bumstead and wear the same shite as whomever they idolize on tik tok.

IMO best in state, hard to think somehwere in Houston, Dallas, Miami, Jupiter etc. isn't better.
What makes it so great is how many different amenities they have. Large basketball gym, large MIT facility, multiple group fitness rooms with classes that are included in your membership, multiple indoor pools, multiple outdoor pools, indoor tennis facility, racquetball, outdoor track, indoor track, large outdoor tennis facility, boxing facility, multiple workout facilities with many types of equipment.
If you're looking for something very specific then I'm sure you can find that specific thing better at another place, but the range of options at Red's is what makes it tough to beat.
ETA: As others have said the worst part by far is the men's locker room. They need to just get rid of the jacuzzi and maybe it'll attract the weird old naked guys less

Another vote for Red's, for all the reasons you mentioned.
Add to that, the presence of Red himself, and the way he runs the place.
The fitness (and spa) facilities at The Houstonian hotel are very very nice, and on par with Red's.
