How strong is strong enough.

It seems like the thing in strength training is to always be aiming at lifting more. But don't increases have to stop at some point and you just maintain? I'm 40 years old and I have no interest in being competitive in this. So I guess my question is how to pick a stopping point and go into more a maintenance mode. I want to be strong enough to handle what life throws at me and feel good about taking my shirt off. How do I pick my target goals on the main lifts?

Depends on how much you weigh.

I'm a big guy at 6'2" and 254lbs. I'm in the middle of a cut and hoping to get down another 15 or 20 lbs.

That's a great base, but you know as well as I do, you get hungry for more shortly after you hit those numbers.
To the OP, I don't think there's any right answer for you. Every time I reach a goal, I need more.

IMO if you can squat and DL 225x5 you are strong enough to do pretty much anything life in the US is going to throw at you. The world is built for average people and average people don't lift at all. If you want to be able to take your shirt off, watch what you eat.

Good point. The rest of us were talking about males. Good job reminding us that women lift too and deserve to be included in these conversations.

First,
What is your current regiment?
What has worked in the past and what hasn't?
Second,
You are a little older, depending on how serious you are you can always see about where your testosterone levels need to be. Or you can seek legitimate supplements such as a good multi vitamin maybe extra vitamin c, e, k, and zinc.
Third,
You need to be in on this for the long haul. You may need to workout more frequently and maybe not as intense or vice versa. Your body is your experiment.
Imo
I'd say at your weight a good 300-315 bench, 405 squat and deadlift are respectable numbers to shoot for in the long run. Assuming you are not close to those already

When have you needed to pick up more than 225 pounds?

If you are not training for anything competitive and can DL and squat 2xBW and bench 1.25xBW, you are strong enough.
Chances are once you get there you will want more though.

I feel that I'm strong enough. I would rather focus on improving my body shape, increasing my flexibility and improving my striking. I've fallen in love with hitting the heavy bag.
Each person's "strong enough" is going to be vastly different.

Why can't you do that and be strong?

Super Strength is not that important. Agility is want you want.
Athleticism, not bulk.
You want to be good at sports and fighting, not lifting weights.
Your goal should be to be built like a gymnast.

Why do y'all keep saying things like this? Look up jujimufu or whatever his name is on YouTube. He is weird but he is strong as hell and does crazy athletic stuff.

You said you'd rather work on flexibility and what not. Why can't you do all of it?

Because I'm not that interested in squatting 400, benching 300, etc. I would rather devote my time to the things I mentioned.
What's confusing about that?
ETA: And I never said I wasn't strong. Maybe not by your standards, but surely by mine.

Great info guys. After being a chubby runner for over a decade I finally realized I'm not really built for running. At least not the marathon long distances I was doing. I started lifting a couple of years ago and have been doing it off an on. I usually peter out at about 300 on squats and 225 on bench. I've been slowly building back up over the last two months. After my half marathon in October I think I am going to go all in with the grey-skull for a while. I really like the look of that program. I'm loving this board. It helped me discover Avatar and has helped me learn a lot.
