I had a pair of Hokas once. Once.

I am returning a pair of Hoka Clifton 8s to the store today, left shoe was super comfy and the support for your arches is great but the right shoe was uncomfortable as all hell since the outside foam was constantly jabbing into the bottom of my foot.

I started wearing Hokas after my new balance and brooks running shoes were causing pain. Tried Hoka and they really have done me right. They’re so ugly, though.

The shift nurses who are on their feet 12 hours recommended them.

Had a pair of Clifton 8 that caused so much arch pain and blisters I had to return them after just 25 miles. Hokas are not for everyone. Good luck with that.

I’ve had mizunos, new balance, ASICS, brooks. I’ve liked some more than others but Hokas were the only ones I couldn’t wear due to actual pain while running.

My arches are horrible. I run in Mizuno Waverunners. It's been the best for my arches.

Maybe too much support has weakened your feet?

local shoe store in Birmingham had the 8 on sale for 40% off, I tried them on and jogged outside the store for a short bit. They were some of the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever run in - the outside foam that you mentioned is the reason, it was digging into the side of my foot the entire time.

disclaimer: I wear Altra almost exclusively, but in my experience Brooks and Saucony are much more comfortable shoes, and I believe their build quality is better as well.

I ordered the Clifton 8s, got them in mid December, thought they were great, but they're already toast. Will definitely not be buying another pair. I didn't even run in them.

Probably why the sole wore down so fast. Hoka doesn’t put much rubber on the soles and walking is more abrasive.

That's New Balance to me. Have 2 pairs of OnClouds and I love them.

To each their own.
