Looking for something good with the basics. Time, distance, pace, heart rate etc.

Not trying to get my pants pulled down over the price.

Just bought the Forerunner 230. Can get on Amazon for $180 or eBay for about $130. No HR monitor built into it but you can snag a ANT+ chest strap (much more accurate from what I hear) for cheap separately.

Or the Forerunner 235 has wrist based HR built in.

I have the Garmin Vivosmart HR. It's just OK. Not really sure how accurate the heart rate monitor is.

It constantly tells me I'm climbing stairs throughout the day even if I never do.

The two biggest things I like about it is that it allows me to track workouts with estimated calories burned based on weight and HR data. The second thing I like is that when connecting to my phone via Bluetooth it will show who is calling and messaging me.

Amazon has the 610 for $160, so about #240 off.

I think some of the FitBit models have most all of that. Distance is based on steps though, not GPS, on most. I know I can adjust stride length on mine through the app. I don't think any have pace except maybe the smart watch version. And that pairs with your phone.

The Alta also calculates calories burned throughout the day. Mine is the Alta without HR monitor. But they have one with that, and a few other models with HR.

I just checked, and the Surge has built in GPS and HR.

FitBit models

The Charge 2 tracks heart rate, steps, sleep, and has a GPS. Has a program that estimates VO2 max. Also syncs to your phone for text and call alerts. It costs $150.00 new.

I've had a Garmin FR 220 for years that's been reliable for GPS on runs, as long as you're not in a wooded area. Comes with a HR chest strap, which is more accurate than wrist-based monitors. Can prob get one for cheap on eBay now.

I've got a Fitbit blaze, and I only use it for steps. Unless I'm mistaken all Fitbit models except the surge use your phones gps through Bluetooth, so no on board gps.

I also have a Garmin forerunner that I use for running. Gps is much more accurate.

Look at Garmin Forerunners. Walmart online had very good prices when I was looking.

That's not really how it works. The FR 610 is an older model than the FR 230/235. The 610 is a very plain Jane watch without color display. The FR 230/235 are basically smart watches and GPS watches in one. They are workout loadable and have basically a mini app store to customize it. Looks like the 610 is over 6 years old.

I highly recommend looking on Amazon for the factory refurb Garmins. I got the 920xt for $199 and it was a $445 MSRP watch at the time. It looked perfectly brand new. Has never once had a single glitch.

Also, if possible, I'd get a watch with GPS and GLONASS. Picks up the satellites sooooo much faster. My old watch took a few minutes. This watch acquires satellites before I walk out the door.

Trying to decide between the

Fitbit charge 2 heart rate +

and the

Garmin vivoactive HR

for my husband. He does not run but he religiously works out (strength training and crossfit type stuff).

Fitbit is on sale at target for $130.
Garmin on sale for $148.

I had the first Fitbit Charge, and my wife has a VivoFit. All depends on what he'll use to sync it and if y'all prefer Fitbit or Garmin. I would say battery life, but the Vivoactive has a rechargeable battery where the Vivofit has a replaceable watch battery. That's why my wife stuck with the Garmin she has.

He would like something to track his heart rate and calories burned mainly. He works out a ton and watches what he eats very carefully. He doesn't run at all.

Honestly, neither one of us have one so we really don't know what all they can do.

They mainly started out as glorified pedometers. Now it depends on how much data you want. Sounds like he doesn't need GPS tracking if he doesn't run. My fitbit Alta tracks steps, sleep, active minutes, and miles (based on stride length/#of steps). I don't care for HR as they're not that accurate on the wrist.
