Approaching 50 and started a M-W-F elliptical cardio routine. Tu-Th have become a light weight day for arm, abs, back. My question is do I need to add some leg work to the weight days? Or is the elliptical considered a "leg day". Just trying to stay fit so I'm not a stuck in my chair grandpa later in life.

Better than nothing, but not as good as weights and cardio.

It’s definitely way better than nothing.

I would make sure to include flexibility work AFTER your cardio sessions to keep your hips and back loose and in shape. Body weight squats and/ or lunges would be good if you are not wanting to use weights

Yea if you use the assault bike

You can get an unreal leg pump on that thing

Just throw in some daily leg raises and body weight squats for mobility and joint strength. No reason to be loading up eight on you back and hips at your age. Congrats on staying active

Depends on your goals. I am approaching 50 an still squat heavy regularly. My theory is, I will get to a point where I can't add muscle or strength any longer due to my age so I want to be as strong as I can when that happens so hopefully the slide downward will take longer. Of course overall health is the most important part in my opinion.

Long answer to a short question but if you don't have any knee, hip, or back issues I would add some lifting(squats) to your leg day

I did squats, press, and a 45 minute spin class this morning. Legs got a good workout.

Depends on what type of cardio. If you're on an assault bike or something similar, it definitely gives your legs a brutal workout.

Yea agree, assault bike, concept rower, or running hills I would consider good enough for a minimalistic leg day.

ETA: but not an elliptical

Cam Hanes only runs mountains for his leg day routines.
