When was this photo taken? Looks like he’s in offseason form.

If his height and weight that are listed is accurate, he's got about 7 inches and 50 lbs on me, but my arms and chest look better. Gut is about the same. He's probably got me well beat on leg strength and speed/explosiveness, but I think I could take him on anything endurance based.

That being said, best player never really is the most athletic. Show me the top DBs, WRs, and edge rushers physique. Go look at pics of Brady/Manning/Brees from their prime and I'm sure it is about the same.

From what I’ve heard Mahomes is a huge Beer hound

I guess this is a good example of being shredded not necessarily being indicative of health. He’s also gifted in something very specific and shouldn’t be used as a metric for everyday men to use to regulate their own health. For all we know his blood work is shite and he has high blood pressure.

But I know what you were getting at. I’m surprised he’s not a little more defined, too. To be fair, Brady has the physique of a dad who works in an office or teaches English.

Brady wasn’t as chubby though. I think Mahomes drinks a ton of beer and eats like shite.

This is true. He’s basically still a college boy at heart. He parties as well as he plays QB.

Not me.

Leanness does not correlate well with being a highly skilled athlete at a position like OB. That's often true with other positions too. The number of freakishly athletic professional athletes who lack a six pack dwarfs the ones who do.

Elite athletes come in different looking packages, not everyone who is great at a sport looks like a fitness model.

But I can read between the lines here, I see what yer saying, ol' Pat does have the body of a guy who works the hell out of a pallet jack at the warehouse before heading home to enjoy some dominos pizza and Call of Duty.

This is true. Vince Wilfork is fricking fat, and was one of the best nose guards to ever live and moved like a tiger on the line of scrimmage. Larry Allen was over 400 pounds and ran down a skill player. Freaks are called that for a reason.

I was prepared to bring up the Bosa brothers as well. (At least I think that is who is pictured above by LSUpride87), because they're perfect examples of the freak athletes that look amazing who are also gym rats. Plenty of dudes are more pedestrian looking who are maniacs about their training and general health, despite it not showing physically. Then there's some who don't give a shite, look like it, and still play like monsters...perfectly embodied by Mr. Mahomes...and to some extent Kelce too.

Times have definitely changed too. I was listening to an episode of Joe Defranco's podcast when he was talking to Brian Cushing(USC MLB who played for the Texans that definitely had a physique and a high performance training practice) and they were talking about what they called "The Gun Show" and Brian was mentioning how it was important to train for performance but he also wanted to "look the part" of a professional athlete. It was a little surprising.

I can definitely remember being a kid in the 80's and seeing pro athletes that I thought, "He looks just like my dad." but you see that less and less.

to be fair PM is a gym rat. He just mainly works the proteus and works on rotational force, speed etc.

but he also loves to eat and drink from rumors

he has one of the better trainers in the world though and does work his arse off to be fair.

Yep. He works his arse off. Which is why this physique is wild. His diet and drinking habits must be awful

I mean he has a good amount of visceral fat

I see Cushing at the ball fields in Houston all the time. Dude looks like a 80s WWF wrestler now. More jacked than when he played.

Yeah... I know that it's Netflix and in front of the cameras and all... but his training on the QB show was no joke. As you said, it was highly position-specific, but it's still no joke and left no doubt that dude works hard to optimize his body for the sport.

I'm heavily into downhill mountain biking, and it's very interesting the different physiques in the sport, as there doesn't appear to be one optimized body type: weight, height or physique. Even at the highest level of the sport, you have short little dudes who podium, short ripped dues, average bodied dudes, tall skinny dudes, and tall ripped dudes. It's something that the trainers for the sport talk about a lot, because there doesn't seem to be like one optimized body feature that provides an advantage like in a lot of other sports.

At some point genetics and god given talent has to matter, as well. Mahomes is the 1% of the 1% in his field. To call him an outlier is an understatement for him and most players in pro sports. Despite eating like a raccoon on Bourbon St during Mardi Gras behind a strip club, he’s still has that “X” factor that you can’t train or diet into someone.

Right. It does make you think though if he had the perfect diet and didn’t drink, where would that put him?
