You don't need carbs. You need fat or carbs but not both. I get maybe 10 carbs a day max and have built plenty of muscle over the last year. My blood work is also perfection. Completely normal.

Congrats on the high cholesterol, fatty liver, and gall stones.
carbohydrates are a major stimulus for hepatic DNL and more likely to directly contribute to NAFLD than dietary fat intake.

correct. the meta that menno posted on this showed you can absolutely build muscle without carbs. helps to have them though. but do not need them.
do whatever diet helps you stay consistant.
i rail against the keto/carnivore/if claims....but i personally eat mainly IF with keto/carnivore plus isopure RTD protein drinks
its my preferred way of eating. but its not some special formula to allow me ot disregard the laws of thermodynamics. it works for me becuase i like meat and allows me to stay consistantly in caloric deficit.

Ah yes. I see people dropping dead daily from drinking milk and eating apples.

its a miracle people survived the Middle Ages on a diet of mostly bread and beer

Bodies respond differently to different things. Could be your body has a problem process certain things, could be (as others have suggested) simply that your overall volume of eating has decreased. Some people just do better eating certain things.
My wife has a friend who found out she's allergic to black pepper and cannot process carbs well at all. She's almost a year carnivore, grass fed ungulates mostly and some chicken. She's healthier than she's been in years, but acknowledges that she is a fairly unique case.

This is simply not true.

You can watch videos of tribes today that still eat animal based with 0 vegetables in their diets.
Short video where a doctor visits an African tribe and discusses their diet

There are a few great points brought up in this thread.
I personally eat animal based + fruit, but it's basically just an avoid processed food diet.
This diet has been amazing for me.

Two questions
1) does adding carbs to a carnivore diet take the body out of ketogenic state?
2) Does carnivore diet increase likelihood of gout?

Carnivore is just a more extreme version of ketogenic diet. Too much protein can impair ketone production. Have no idea about the gout.

2) Does carnivore diet increase likelihood of gout?
I turn 49 in September.
I started it for the sole purpose of getting rid of my gout. Had it for years, all over my body. Elbows, wrists, knees, fingers, and of course ankles and toes..also Achillies heel.
I started strict carnivore Jan 7th.
For me, it slowly went away over about 5 months and the attacks were nowhere near as painful. Didn't have another one until last weekend and had just 3 straight vodka drinks. POOF, it came back, but again, not nearly as bad. Now, it's gone again.
As far as the other benefits I've seen;
Down about 35 lbs.
Blood work (which I never did before, but decided to get done 2 months ago) was very good. Cholesterol was high, but I'm not worried about that, because everything else was fine.
Had a toenail fungus on my middle toe of my right foot for years. It's gone.
Used to have an issue where it seemed like only one of my nostrils would let a ton of air through at a time. Tough to explain, but now I breathe through both nostrils completely all the time.
Energy is about the same as it was before, but there's no crashing after I eat and my ability to think clearer, faster, has definitely improved a lot.
Because of those reoccurring gout attacks over the months, I haven't worked out nearly as much as I'd like, but I didn't lose any muscle at all, in fact, it seems like I gained muscle. I'm still losing inches, but not losing anymore weight.
Almost no farts. Kind of sad about that TBH.
Also, no constipation. I poop maybe 4 times a week now, but zero issues.
It's not tough for me at all to stick to this way of living. I think a large part of it is the fear of having the kind of gout attack like I had in December last year. Fear is one hell of a motivator, but seeing the results, in just 7 short months makes it way easier to think of this as not a diet, but a lifestyle.

What’s a typical week look like meal plan wise for you?

No real plan at all.
The base, though, is ribeye steak. I buy between 50-60 lbs of it all at once at a local place in Arcadia, Florida. That lasts me close to 6 weeks. Sounds expensive, but the ribeyes there only cost about $6.50 a lb. Definitely not the kind of marbling you get in higher grade meats, but I don't care. It's a ribeye, still tastes fantastic.
On top of that, I will eat a few eggs during the week and will put butter, Amish rolled butter, on my steaks. I fish a ton and eat mangrove snapper or other kinds of saltwater fish probably once a week or so. Bacon probably once a week, if that. I'll also buy some ground beef 73/27 lean to fat ratio to mix w/ the eggs.
The only "cheating" I do is black coffee.
It's kind of strange. After a while, it's almost like your body tells you what you need. For instance, I'll go a while w/o eating fish, then all of a sudden, I'll crave it. Then, I'm good to go another week or two weeks. I also eat only once or twice a day, not because it's a scheduled thing, but because I only eat when my body tells me to. Sometimes I'll go 2 days w/o eating (rarely, but it happens) and not even realize it.
Oh, and make sure to salt everything to taste. I go through a ton of salt now. I don't worry about putting it in my water, but it does go on everything I eat except bacon.
I'm still having a hard time believing the results.

yes. if you wanted you could start with having vegetables and fruit. you want get into ketosis but it will help you lower inflammation. Look at whole 30 for examples. then you could slowly move to more carnivore or complete elimination style diet if you wanted to.

this is more of an individualized thing but in general you move to an elimination style diet to stop things like gout.
as the other poster said, it will slowly go away. at that point you can either slowly add back in certain foods, 1 at a time to see how you react. example add white rice or a certain fruit or certain veggie cooked same way every time. then you can slowly add back in 1 at a time until you figure out something that triggers it.

I visted the H&F board hoping to find a thread on this, and wouldn't you know, it was at the top of the board.
I agree with the premise that fad diets are mostly unsustainable for the majority of the population, but I have heard enough about this one that I embarked on a journey to try out carnivor for 5 weeks, I am two days in. The caveat will be that if my workouts / energy levels are suffering then I will supplement with small amounts of fruit as I have heard this helps without defeating the purpose of the diet. I do take a greens powder in the morning with my vitamins.
Some background: I am 30 years old and in pretty good shape, workout consistently and dont really need to lose weight. Been around my same wight for 8-10 years. If I drop 15# then I will be in the best shape that I have been in for a long time. My primary reason for wanting to try it is just to see what the hype is about. I am going on a 30+ day kick of no alcohol for the first time probably since being of legal drinking age, and I figured it would be a good time to give this diet a shot since most of my bad eating habits come on the back of alcohol consumption. Its a convenitent time to try it since we are in the lull between baseball and football seasons, no big holidays to get in the way. I also have a lot of meat in my freezer that needs to be cleared out before hunting season. I don't expect that I will keep this up for the long term, but we're going to see what its about. Going into it with an open mind and I will report back with my findings.

Assuming you're referencing last years harvest, and assuming venison. You'll want to add fats to the diet since vension is so lean.
Posted on 7/10/23 at 2:12 pm to JohnDoe00
Venison, ducks, and pelagic fish from this spring / summer. A lot of the venison was made into sausage and should have decent fat content, I really had too much made into sausage and regret that.
