The past two weeks I have been getting a tightness in my central abs during deadlifts. It goes from my rib cage down to my waist. Almost as if everything is being pulled along the midline.

I've been cutting weight for several months now, and so I haven't been going super heavy on my sets.

Are my abs weak, or should I consider a weight belt? I've thrown in extra ab work to hopefully remedy this.

Update: Decided to focus on ab strength first. I've been using the ab roller and hanging leg raises the past few weeks.

Yesterday I decided to try a narrower grip because I was grabbing the bar at the rings. Not only was the ab strain nearly gone, but the lift was MUCH easier. I have no idea why I had been gripping so wide all these years.

I would take a break. Your body knows best, and when your body starts giving warning signs you should listen before ay serious injury occurs.

I would try the belt. Most believe that the belt is there to help your back, which is true, but the primary use for the belt is that it gives something for your abs to push against.

Does your gym have one of the those shitty community belts for you to try before you buy a good belt?

I'm working out at the LSU Rec center. I suspect they have some loaner belts. Also, I wouldn't be opposed to buying my own.

If you are going belt less you need to strengthen your core, and lower the weight.

Also work on your breathing technique when engaging your core

I have not worn a belt since 2013.

Looks good. Just make sure you get the single buckle.

INZER FOREVER BELT

Best belt on the market. I love mine and anyone that ever lifts with me that uses it always orders one to replace their own. Don't go cheap on your belt. Remember you only get one back. If you screw it up the $50 you saved on the belt won't do you any good.

ETA: get yourself an ab wheel and start really getting serious about doing abs daily. It will help all around to have stronger abs.

Does anyone know if I can find a quality belt in store on the north shore? I need to invest into one but I'd like to try it on before dropping 100+ on a belt.

I have yet to find what can be considered a good belt at a sporting goods store. All they normally sell are those belts with a wide back and a tapered front.

I have an Inzer as I thought that was the only one I could use for competition. If you want some custom options look at General Leathercraft/Pioneer Fit. THey have some basic ones all they way to fully customized.

Have you incorporated any functional core training throughout your programming? A belt will be no good to you if you do not work on improving core strength.

You do deadlifts without a belt on? Thats not very smart.

Plenty of people pull 500+ without a belt, on the other hand plenty of people don't pull over 225 without one. It's really a personal choice that really depends on your training style.

Changed up my grip this week and it made a world of difference.

That would be a snatch grip deadlift. Good assistance but terrible as a main mover lol

Yea, I feel like a complete moron. I guess when I started it felt stronger, but as I progressed I began stalling at heavier weights. In fact, I haven't really increased my max in several years. Most of my progress has been at lower rep ranges.

Next week I might try and push to see how much I do with the correct hand placement.
