Chances of US Open in Louisiana?

It's clearly too hot for a US Open in June in Louisiana, but I think UClub could be a great US Open course. It's long enough, funky enough lines, goofy golf greens, and some good character. If you slimmed up the fairways and grew out the rough, I think pros would struggle with par from 7,800 yards.

Clearly a lot of other issues like crowds and sponsor tents may prohibit it from ever hosting.

Any other course in the state that could be hard enough to host a true US Open? Chances the USGA says screw the heat and brings the national championship to La?

We don't have the soil conditions here that the USGA prefers.

Squire Creek could host based on the layout and space there. But it's not close enough to any major city with enough hotels, etc.

UClub or the Bluffs has a better shot at a PGA

I know it's funny but rebunker the course and a few of the green complexes/shape and it'd be a quality major layout.

It's way too hot to have it in the south for a tournament happening in June. North Carolina is the furthest south they'll go.

The course, maybe. But the whole complex would need "more" from the clubhouse to the parking to handle something like the US Open. It's like saying "sure, change everything and it has a chance".

Squire Creek

Way too short. If they made new tee boxes as far back as they can go it would still only be probably 7300 yards.

Can the pros walk The Bluffs? That sounds brutal.

Designers and officials need to realize that length isn't everything. Erin Hills proved that. Even in wind, they tore it up. Smaller fairways, tougher rough, quick/challenging greens.

They have Adams tour events at the Bluffs. I assume they walk.

I agree that length isn't everything. I've played squire dozens of times and I'm telling you without adding length pros would shred the course. It's got wide fairways and even the shortest pro's could reach every par 5 in 2. The long guys would be hitting mid irons.

The courses defense is the greens, but if US Open calibur golfers are hitting no more than 8 iron in on any hole then you are almost taking that defense away.

Augusta is a much easier walk than Erin Hills

I'm not close to being in shape. Having said that, I would rather someone kick me in the nuts then walk all 18 at the bluffs. It'd feel better.

You'd know better than me. It's just the first thing that came to mind. People don't realize the elevation changes of augusta on TV. It's a hike.

One of the bigger problems that I see is that Louisiana is a year round golf state and all the courses that would be fit are most definitely private, surrounded by houses, and have limited to no real estate for crowds (forget about grandstands, tents, parking, common areas,...for a major).

These tournaments often require a month+ of limited to no play prior to get everything in perfect shape and setup. It would be offly hard to get members to be ok with that with what they are having to spend monthly / yearly to play those courses. It would be different if the courses closed for months during the "off-season" that they could use to setup and condition the course, then the member would only lose a week or so. But that ain't happening in LA.

Plus, using UClub for your example (not that I think it would be the best fit or that I even really like the course) UClub while it can be long, only uses gimmicky crap to make the course tougher like the turtle-back greens (or goofy greens as you called them). There is very little trouble in the playing area which will be even narrow, pushing those bunkers and trees farther away from the fairways. You would have to re-design the course for that purpose, or the pros would destroy that place.

Squire would be the only place they'd consider hosting one. They did a trial run with the US Women's mid am

They hosted at Chambers Bay. Which doesn't have a clubhouse. Just a small pro shop to check in.
