I played and beat both.
I got no references from it.
Not saying there weren't any, just that me and most everyone else never picked up on them.

It's not in his list in the OP, but you certainly should play Link to the Past before playing Link Between Worlds.

OoT is referenced often in Wind Waker.

OoT then majoras mask. If you've never played Zelda by 2017 the first two won't be all that fun.

You would be safe with any of the first three as your first entry. However, I would not recommend playing Majora's Mask first. It's a very different game that is polarizing amongst Zelda fans.
