Was sunshine that good? I played it a little bit but maybe didn't give it a chance because it was different.

Galaxy was very good though but didn't play it as much as I'd have liked. Never played 2 either.

And I want to add Super Mario All stars

Super Mario Sunshine was one of my favorite games to play growing up. Yeah the voice acting was abysmal but the graphics were great. It's a very relaxing game to me. Going to the Hotel Delfino course and just sitting on the beach watching the sunset with the music in the background is just really great. The missions get repetitive after a while so the creativity is lacking a little bit because they rehash a lot of bosses.

It's my number one because of the soundtrack and water graphics. I haven't played a game that's water graphics are better than Super Mario Sunshine yet.

Galaxy
Galaxy 2
Super Mario World
Mario 3

Probably the only classic franchise where I enjoy the newer ones infinitely more.

Although I agree, the feel of something like Mario 3 or World were incomparable at the time.

I like "playing" Galaxy more than probably any Mario, but in terms of those first few experiences...tough to beat some of the old.

those games were great, but the 3D format allows for more creative level design.

Super Mario Sunshine was a great game and really underrated by a lot of people. I've beaten it four times over and I agree with everything you said.

However, the reason that game isn't as high as games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy on some peoples list is really just the lack of polish. Think about Noki Bay, in the first level before the waterfall has been unplugged. Despite this, there is a circle of clean water where the waterfall would be falling when it should be polluted. Little issues like that lower the game below other Mario titles for me.

I think Sunshine was poorly received mostly because it had to follow Mario 64. Mario 64 was so revolutionary at the time that Sunshine couldn't help but disappoint, at least a little.

I think I like it a little more now than I did then.

Having said that, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are just full of SO many genius ideas, it blew me away. I'm kind of sad so many people on this board don't seem to have played it.

I still haven't played Galaxy 2. Is it as great as the first?

I actually liked it a little more. Instead of the hub world linking all the other worlds, which I found a little annoying at times, you have a world map where you simply select your stage, ala SMB3 and World. I prefer this as it gets you right into the action a lot quicker.

Overall, though, it's just chocked full of more great ideas, inventive levels to explore, and tight controls. When I think of SMG 1 & 2, I kind of view them more as one massive Mario game, rather than 2 separate titles.

If you loved the first, you'll love the second.

ETA: I also want to add that I remember 2 being more difficult than 1 but that probably only contributed to me liking it more.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was definitely tougher than the first. I never actually got all the galaxies unlocked and I 100%'d the first.

Galaxy 2 had like 200 stars though. I do agree, the difficulty was higher but I think the original edges it ou barely in the game design department

I got all of the regular stars and a few of the green stars. I planned to go back for the green ones, but never got around to it. Rather than complete whole new objectives though, they are simply hidden throughout the levels.

In Mario Galaxy 1, you just play through the levels a second time with Luigi to get the other half of the stars, if I remember correctly.

The final secret world is super challenging but was probably my favorite. I went and watched some Youtube videos of it to refresh my memory.

The final level of the secret world.

I love both of these games. I've said it here before but they have to be in my top 10 for this console generation.
